Default Newb with HDMI, receiver setup question

I've read all kinds of stuff online, but I'm still confused about HDMI vs. component cables. Here's my situation: I've got a 50" Samsung DLP HDTV (720p), a Yamaha receiver with Klipsch 5.1 surround, Directv HD/DVR receiver, an upconvert DVD player, and a wii. I have everything running through the Yamaha for audio/video switching, but it does not have HDMI inputs, and only 2 component inputs, so the DVD player & Directv reciever are hooked up with Component cables, and the wii is hooked up with the standard A/V cable it comes with.

Question #1: Will I benefit from HDMI since my tv is only capable of displaying 720p? If so, is it possible to set up my receiver for sound, and yet get the video quality of the HDMI from the Directv receiver and DVD player? I also have purchased a component cable for the wii, but right now there is no usable input on the Yamaha for another component device .

I would like to be able to purchase a new receiver with plenty of HDMI inputs because I like to do all of the switching through my receiver, but it's not in the budget right now.

Question #2: Will a blue-ray player look better than an upconvert DVD player on a 720p television, or should I wait until I upgrade to a 1080p set?

You should be able to run the video to the tv via HDMI cable and then the audio to the receiver seperatly in theory (haven't tried it). My Hd-A3 looks great on my 720p dlp and the main reason I got it was my Sony SD dvd player looked horrid. I wouldn't say its worth waiting until you upgrade the tv if your not happy with the pq from an sd dvd player. Just because the blu-ray will output in 1080p, doesn't mean you NEED a 1080p set. It will look great on your set and then you can start working towards the new tv down the road. Thats what I would do.
