Default digital coaxial vs RCA

Does a digital coaxial cable that sells for around $30-40 truly make a difference over a standard RCA cable to carry sound?

digital coaxial cables are 75 ohm coax with "RCA" connectors. RCA audio cable is lightly shielded audio cable of unknown resistance/impedence. For very short runs there may not be a difference, for longer runs in environments with a high possibility of interference, the digital coaxial cables are much better.

At the price www.monoprice.com sells the digital coaxial cables, it should not even be an issue !

Ditto to the previous post.

To further answer your question however: NO, "a digital coaxial cable that sells for around $30-40" offers absolutely NO benefit over a digital coaxial cable that sells for $3 - $4.

Digital coaxial does indeed make a difference as opposed to standard RCA connections. Coax can carry DTS and other audio signals where the standard RCA can not. With that being said, is has been proven that expensive cables do no more than their less expensive counterparts. So use the digital coax if you have it but don't fall into the expensive (Monster) cable trap. As the previous poster wrote, go to www.monoprice.com for all of your cable needs or you can get them at Walmart if you don't want to wait.

To further clarify:

"Although nearly all audio-visual connectors, including audio, composite and component video, and S/PDIF audio can use identical 75 Ω cables, sales of special-purpose cables for each use have proliferated. Varying cable quality means that a cheap line-level audio cable might not successfully transfer component video or digital audio signals." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector
