Help connecting ps3, wii and hd cable box to surround sound

Since my surround sound system only has 1 optical input im in quite a dilema. I thought since my tv has an optical output and that my ps3 (hdmi), wii (componet) and hd cable box (componet) are all connected to my tv that i could just go from my tv to my surround sound. Now this worked great for the wii and cable box, but on certain games for the ps3 (rainbow six vegas and graw 2) i dont get true 5.1 surround sound. It works great for warhawk though. On my sound settings i have it set to hdmi and i checked dts and 5.1 dolby digital(if theres anything else i have to check plz let me know). Since this didnt work i decided to buy a toslink optical cable selector. I recieved it today but it is a crap product and i cant even get a sound.

So this is how it goes:

PS3(HDMI)---->TV

WII(COMPONET)---->TV

CABLE BOX(COMPONET)---->TV

TV(OPTICAL CABLE)----> SURROUND SOUND

So any help would be appreciated cause i would like to get true surround sound for my stems and cable box.

I cannot get my PS3 to get any sound at all. I used piggyback cables for my cable box and PS3, but the system doesn't switch between the audios. Not sure where to go now.....

Could you not just hook up the PS3 audio straight to the surround receiver via optical? That's what I did for sound. So far so good. But it's only been two days....

Not sure what "piggyback cables" are?? RCA (red an white)????
If you don't have an HDMI receiver but it does have an optical (Toslink) input, use that as thirsty stated. That would be your best sound option and supports DD 5.1 and DTS for movies and games. You do need to also set the optical out option in the PS3 audio menu I believe when using it in conjuction with HDMI..
