Default No sound through HDMI

hi guys

i'm using a new acer 5920 laptop with a hdmi out, and a hanspree tv with one hdmi port.

my previous laptop took sound as well as picture to the tv no problem with the existing cable. is this a laptop or tv issue? no sound with any media through the hdmi cable. picture is fine. i've tried hd content, non-hd content, games. all have no sound.

i've checked all the settings i can find on the acer in case something is disabled by default, but all settings are listed as "working". i'd really appreciate a solution guys. many thanks.

If your old laptop provided video and sound throught a HDMI cable to the TV then I would say it is the laptop.

If the old laptop was hooked up by some other means then it could be a setting in the TV. Often the audio is menu selected to either come from the HDMI port or a separate audio port. The separate audio port would be required if the laptop had a DVI output and you used a DVI to HDMI cable. Check your TV setup.

thanks. there are no settings to play around with on the tv, just the usual scart/scart2/hdmi/s-video etc etc. i may have to try a different cable just to take that option out of the equation. very odd. thanks for reply anyway. i'll post if i find solution.

Sounds like (no pun intended) the new laptop. If you have an analog audio input for one of the HDMI TV inputs, you might give those a try.

Default similar problem

I have a similar problem, i cannot get my HP DV5t laptop to transmit sound on my Samsung 32" HDTV LN-S3251D through HDMI, picture is fine though. I have another 23" Samsung TV and sound and picture both work perfectly when connected to the same laptop. So i have no idea what to do i am going crazy. My laptop has a blue ray player im trying to use. Please tell me if you figure out the problem.

at least in my case - yes, audio from the laptop speakers, but nothing on the Samsung. I don't buy the fact it is "lack of the cable to carry audio" (i.e., just HDMI video), because audio is part of the HDMI spec/definition!

this appears to be a HUGE Samsung issue - BUT, i have seen others say to "boot your pc/laptop while all is connected."

also, don't overlook BIOS, but i did not see anything in my bios relating to HDMI audio - i only have PC Speakers & "spdif" (headphones) as the 2 options, and no other options anywhere else to choose when/where audio can be sent. PC Speakers is/are set as "default." Also, there's option to choose DTS, Surround, etc., as well as speed 42khz, 48khz and 96khz - they are check-boxes, so you can check ALL boxes - oh, and 3rd option on the sound part is AVI WDM Professional ... something like that.

My laptop is Gateway NV54, and this MUST be a 'known issue.'
The reason I bought it is for the HDMI. And the Samsung TV is 42 inch plasma, definitely should work. There are ZERO options on the Samsung menus related to HDMI audio, but there are some DTS options, Surround, etc. I turned surround off, and will boot my laptop with everything turned on and see how it reacts.

Oddly, i have sound in my headphones, but if i plug headphone mini-to-dual-rca cable from headphone jack to regular audio in on the TV, I get no sound - very odd.

thoughts?

Okay I've had this problem many times; assuming your using windows 7 I know of two things it could be. First and easiest; enable hdmi sound through the volume task; simply right click and then select playback devices. Now select your hdmi output. If this isn't available you can go into bios and make sure that your video output is selected as hdmi not vga or dvi.
Hope this helps
