Default HDMI Splitter question

Sorry for the noob questions, but on the one TV I have, I run DirecTV HD and the PS3. I only have one HDMI port so I switch the cables back and forth. I've been thinking about getting a splitter. Should I go the route of http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 or would this piece suffice http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...ormat=2&style=

I don't believe option two is allowed or would work.

The above plug is HDMI Male to Female DVI, correct? I don't see it on monoprice with just one head, would I need to get an adapter?

Thanks for your help and input.

All you needis a HDMI switch like the 1st one you listed. Forget about the 2nd option, it is for splitting HDMI to 2 DVI's and not for your application. That manual switch from monoprice for only $18 will do the trick. One thing you may want to consider: You may want to add 1 or 2 more HDMI devices down the road. If so, look to this 4x1 HDMI switch for around $50. It also has a remote. I would also pick up your HDMI cables from monoprice as well. Great deal.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave me feedback, pointed me in the right direction, and told me to trust monoprice. I finally got everything in the mail (forgot to order one wire and you can't beat their prices) and got everything hooked up. I have my DirecTV on channel one and PS3 on channel two of the splitter.

This may be my (hopefully) last stupid question...is it bad to have power on both devices and be switching back and forth? Should I leave one off before I "switch" to it's channel? Why I ask is, I figure the PS3 can be on running the "folding at home" program while I'm watching TV.

Thanks again and I'm glad I've found this forum.

I would go ahead and get a 3x1 switch at least..the 2x1 would work fine, but just in case you get another HDMI item....

Hi and welcome to HDF

How about you tell us where you live and the HDTV's that you have, along with this spliter you are using. Also what is your source for HD?

How far away are the HDTV's from the source box?

Does your splitter look like this? (It is not really a splitter - it is a distrubution amp) Did it cost that much? There is a 10m MAX length from the box to ANY HDTV connected to it. I really need the name of the place and the model number of the splitter you bought. You must have something - the website you bought it from?

You probably will need to tell us more about the splitter. Like where did you buy it and do you have a link. The one Lee linked is HDCP complient and maybe yours is not.

Never saw one of these. It is not a splitter. From what you are posting, it is not a constant feed split or else each TV would act independent of the other. That is how the Distribution Amp works that I linked.

What this thing is doing is feeding the signal either to the left or to the right. Not both. More of a "Y" adapter than a splitter.

QUESTION: You can turn each TV on and off seperately but not both together?

You can return it and get the Dist. Amp that I linked. That will do what you want - provide the same source to two TV's at the same time all the time.
