Default Samsung HDMI Connection problem

I just purchased a samsung HTq80 home theater, I have a motorola 6412 Cable box and a samsung lnr32w tv. I tried connecting them yesterday with a dvi to hdmi (cable box to HT) and HDMI to HDMI (HT to tv). I get video whren playing a DVD but when I switch to HDMI on the menu I get 3 seconds of video from the cable box and then my sceen goes black and the audio becomes choppy.

I called samsung and the level 2 tech said that there is a prblem whith HDMI connections. he said there is no standard and the chose to use HDMI 1.1 as their standard. It wont be able to communicate with my cable box. He suggested using component cables (after spending $300 on two monster cables). He said that they are aware of the problem but he isn't sure if they will fix it.

So I just spent $420 for a home theater that I may have to spend $65 to send it back.

If I purchase component cables instead of using the HDMI calbes what can I expect to see. He said there shouldn't be any difference, just more cables. The TV cable box and HT are all 1080i.

Thanks for the help...

There will be a slight difference. Component cables are analog and not digital, both on audio and video.

I have the same problem with my Samsung TV. I've been driving myself crazy thinking I was doing something wrong with the setup. Good to know its not something I'm doing wrong but it sucks that the HDMI doesn't work. I have component cables and they work good with the Motorola box. I can't really compare them to the HDMI though because as you said the HDMI only gives like 3 seconds of picture before it goes black.

Do you still have the receipt for those Monster HDMI cables? If so, take them back. You can get good HDMI cables off ebay for $10 each. Dont buy into the premium cable myth. As far as the difference in picture quality between HDMI and component? There might be a slight difference, but you would probably need to do a side by side comparison. The HDMI specification is still in its early stages, but it is going to be around for some time.
