first off the equipment...
hitachi 57" 57f510 (crt 1080i)- HDMI input directv-rca dtc210 - DVI output i keep reading that HDMI is the new and best digital connection, but the difference is only noticed on large screens. My question is... how much better will the picture be with HDMI connection vs. a componet? considering the monitor and the DVI to HDMI. thanks |

HDMI and DVI use digital technology as opposed to Component using analog.
Some people report a noticable improvement when upgrading their connection to HDMI or DVI, some people don't. You can make a rather small investment in an HDMI/DVI cable at... www.computercablestore.com ...and judge for yourself if there's a difference. |

In general, in the case of CRT TV's the uncompressed digital Video signal will not enhanced the PQ very much. As you know the final display will be analog because your have CRT.
However, if one day you get a DVR, it will then be important to have DVI (or HDMI) connection because of HDCP content protection and broadcast flags.

HDHoosier - "i keep reading that HDMI is the new and best digital connection, but the difference is only noticed on large screens."
The only reason it is the best is due to the fact that incorperates both digital video and digital audio into one connector. you take away the digital audio and HDMI is the same thing as DVI. The other advantage that is over looked often is the size of the cable and the reduced wire mess behind your setup. HDMI cables and connectors are tiny compared to DVI or Component. Infact I have a sony Vega at home with broken component jacks on the back, simply because the Component cable was too thick and actually cuased the solder points to be weakend. Hopefully I have given you a little more insight if you decide you would like to try the HDMI cables here is a direct link, http://www.computercablestore.com/HD...GA-Cables.aspx Enjoy! |

I have a similar, but different question. I am getting ready to purchase my first HDTV. The potential setup as of now is:
Sony KP-51WS520 or KP-57WS520 (1 HDMI input) Denon Theater in the Box (DVD w/ component output) Time Warner Digital (DVI output) I figured I would hook-up the STB to TV via DVI to HDMI, then DVD to TV via component cable. I have seen in several threads that with RP CRTs, there is not a noticable difference in PQ if you use component cable as opposed to DVI to HDMI to hookup STB to TV. I think I also have read (although I can't find it) that if I by an upconverting DVD wtih a DVI or HDMI output and ran that to the HDMI on the TV there would possibly be a noticable improvement over component cable, even on a RP CRT. Is this true? Thanks for any input. Scott |

I have the 51" 510 and currently hooked stb via DVI (moto 6200) the only diff I've seen between dvi and component is that dvi seems to produce a slightly darker picture (deeper, richer) I am also getting ready to buy an upconverting DVD player which would use DVI out , then I would switch my stb back to component I am hoping there will be more of a diff (improvement) with DVD player via DVI and Faroudja DCDi than Adelphia HD via DVI... just my thoughts

forgot to ask, curious which Denon HTiB you're looking at ? I am looking at http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EcQpuV4...0&I=033DVD1910 it just kills me that it's not a 5 disc changer I have gotten used to that with my current player...

Xplorer,
Thanks for the reply. The HTIB from Denon is the DHT-485. Saw it on their website. You can get it with the DVD (DVD-555) or without. The DVD-555 is a pretty basic player with component output. I could live with it for a while and then move it to another room and upgrade later. However, if I can upgrade for just a little more money I will, IF it makes a difference. Scott |

Anyone else have an opinion on using the HDMI input on the TV for the DVD player rather than the STB?
Thanks...Scott |

I have a Hitachi 57" 57f520 (crt 1080i)- HDMI input and i have just added a Sony NS75H Upconverting DVD player.
The Hitachi output at 480P was always stunning to begin with however Ican honestly say that there is almost no difference with the upconverted PQ!? Perhaps a 1% improvement in color depth and detail. This might be noticeable at 3 feet but you won't see it at 8 feet. I even ran my old sony simultaneously with this one and played "The Return of the King" in PIP mode to compare. Very difficult to discern a difference. Any suggestions anyone? |

I just added a Key Digital HD Xplorer card to my Pioneer 434CMX so I could judge for myself if HDMI is that much better than component.
At 4 ft distance, yeah I see the difference. It just looks...tighter? But at my typical viewing distance of 8 - 10 ft, I'm not seeing the benefit. Combined digital audio and video is very nice, but if you think you're missing a quantum leap in PQ, don't stress out. My Pros and Cons of HDMI: HDMI Pros: small form factor combined digital video and audio the way of the future HDMI Cons: Price vs benefit abuse connectors can pull out too easily Some equipment with HDMI ports are buggy |
