What is HD?

Hello all,
As the header states, several questions re how to connect my Panasonic Viera S series plasma HDTV to my old Yamaha stereo receiver. I understand that there must be a digital-to-analog converter situated btw/ the TV and the Yamaha. A TOSlink optical cable from the TV's audio OUT runs to the DAC and then RCA pin plugs run from the DAC to the Yamaha. Is that correct? (More appropriately, is that all there is to it?) Second, does this TV series default to TV speakers OFF when an external source is introduced or must one go into the menu and manually turn the TV speaker to OFF? According to the manual, if the onboard speaker is switched OFF, several other audio parameters will follow suit-- surround sound, leveler, etc. Third, how can I connect my Hitachi laptop computer to the TV so as to view YOUTUBE vids? The computer has a VGA port. I understand that vga/hdmi cables exist; so, can the computer be connected directly to the HDMI 2 port on the TV w/ no intermediate device, eg, converter? This is for the video component only. How is the audio connected? I expect to feed the audio signal to the TV via the headphone jack (or I use it as a headphone jack) on the computer. Does this require what is called a "Y" cable where a small input line runs into a converter and then into RCA pins? Thank you. |
