Default HDMI v DVI

Is there a difference in quality between these two? Or are the even in quality, not factoring in that HDMI may become the standard. Also do notice a difference when converting dvi to HDMI or vice versa? Mainly I just bought the Sony KP51WS510, got the last boxed on best buy had and got it for $350 off. I felt this was worth it to not get the 520 which has both a DVI and HDMI, where as the 510 only has DVI. If i hook up an HDMI signal to the DVI input using a convert, will it look worse than if it was just a stright DVI or HDMI?

Thanks

The only difference between the two is that HDMI carries Dolby Digital Surround sound as well, DVI just carries video.

I have never heard of a reduction in quality with the DVI-HDMI converter cables.

Link for cheaper cables...

Default Sony KP-51WS510

Would I even need to get a HDMI to DVI converter if I get the Comcast HD DVR box?

I just bought the same Sony TV and had this question about what cords to purchase. In other words, why would I buy an HDMI to DVI converter and not just get a DVI cord initially.

What other cords do I need to purchase?

Thanks again--

The only reason you would need a converter is if you already had a DVI or HDMI cable and needed to convert 1 side. You could just get a DVI to HDMI cable if you needed it (or use a strait DVI or HDMi cable if both your TV and STB have both). You could always use your component out from the STB and run your audio (optica/coax) to your surround sound if you have 1.

From an video perspective HDMI and DVI are electrically identical. HDMI carries either PCM or DD audio. There is zero PQ difference between the two. There is no such thing as a DVI to HDMI converter or vice versa. The only difference in the two besides audio is the connector. You can get DVI to HDMI cables off ebay for around $10. Dont be fooled by the expensive cables telling you they will give you a better picture. They are BSing you. If your box is HDMI and your TV is DVI then you will need to run the analog audio to your set for the DVI input. Another option is to run the optical output to a receiver.

No such thing as a DVI to HDMI converter. A converter takes two incompatible signals and makes one compatible with the other. Take a component to RGB converter. The signals are incompatible with each other so a conversion process is required. In the case of DVI and HDMI the digital signals for video are compatible with each other. The only difference is the connector. The audio wires are just omitted. If you cut open an DVI to HDMI cable you will just find wires nothing else.

Sorry, I meant DVI to HDMI adapter not coverter (that is what I thought Tennessee meant) which I use for my PC to TV connection. I already had the DVI cable, I just added a DVI to HDMI ADAPTER to my TV end.

Don't most STB's have DVI outputs? My TV only accepts DVI so I just bought a DVI to DVI cord.

I don't actually have the Comcast HD DVR box yet, but i was assuming it would have a DVI output.

But, you know what they say when you assume...

It will most likely have componenet and either DVI or HDMI. It is rare to my knowledge of STB's having both DVI and HDMI , but you may get lucky and have both. The newer models I have seen have more HDMI than DVI. If you already have the cable and your STB winds up having HDMI, just get and DVI to HDMI adapter. I think mine was like 8 bucks or something. Or if you can, just exchange the cord you bought with a HDMI to DVI cable. And as always, component is another option if needed. Just remember to run your seperate audio connection (hopefuly digital) to your SS or TV..

Most STBs from satellite use HDMI. HDMI will replace DVI here shortly.

I have Comcast's HD-DVR (Motorola Dual Tuner) and it has DVI - Component & Firewire out. All he will need is a DVI cable and of course optical for his DDSS.
