I tried this question on another forum and never got a response. newbie here.
I would like to connect my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR to my receiver to receive audio & video. Currently I have the 8300 connected via it's HDMI cable to my Sony TV. My question is do I remove the HDMI cable between the TV and the 8300HD DVR and use the wiring as below ? As a FYI I have the following pieces of equipment: Yamaha RX-V657 ( non- HDMI) Sony ES3100 DVD ( has a HDMI jack) Denon CD player Sony SXRD60XBR1 ( 2 HDMI ports) Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR (HDMI connection) What I have hooked up so far with success; I have hooked up the DVD video to the receiver (via component cables), receiver to monitor TV via component cables, audio from DVD via optical out to rec. DVD works, audio through external speakers, Movie shown on TV CD player to receiver via coaxial out cable , works properly My confusion; currently the cable broadcast & HD signal to the TV is transferred from the 8300HD to the TV via a HDMI cable. Wonderful picture audio through TV. I was worried about those non HD stations and not sure how to approach the wiring. I was going to run video out from the 8300 via component cables to the receivers DTV/CBL jacks and use the 8300HD Optical out cable for the audio to the receivers DTV/CBL optical jack, but the HDMI cable has me stumped, does it stay hooked from the 8300HD to the TV or is it removed, can you please help clear up the confusion. |

If you really want to go through the receiver for video, just connect it via component video since it does not support HDMI. Then optical out to the the receiver. Map the optical to that component input and you should be all set. Another option would be to leave the HDMI in addition to the component out from the 8300 to the TV for when/if you would rather just use the TV speakers (if that is a option for you)..
Component supports HD (up to 1080i because of the TV's restriction), so no worries there. Not sure what you mean by "I was worried about those non HD stations and not sure how to approach the wiring" exactly????

You can go one of two ways:
1. Leave the HDMI connection to the TV in place for video and run an optical connection from the cable box to the receiver for audio. 2. Disconnect the HDMI cable and run component video and optical audio from the cable box to the receiver. Run component video from the receiver to the TV. Use option 1 if the video quality is better using HDMI from the cable box to the TV. Sometimes video quality degrades with multiple the component video connections. You have to give both ways a try and see whether one looks better than the other. As for audio from cable channels (both HD and non-HD), there's no difference between HDMI and optical. They are both digital and will pass the type of audio used on all TV channels equally well. |

Thank you for the advice I will get it a try. Can I also ask, my DVD has a HDMI connection and it's just setting there. Could that be used in some fashion by routing it to the TV and just have audio go to the receiver and would there be any deference in picture quality ? |

The cable box will digitize any analog sources for output over optical or the HDMI. |
