I picked up a DCX4300 from a Comcast retailer in the north Chicago suburbs after the technician brought with him a component-only box for the initial installation. I am experiencing that grinding noise as well - it's so loud now that it's hard to even watch TV. I also temporarily lose signal (TV goes to a blue screen with "No Signal" showing) when switching between SD to HD or HD to SD. I am connected via HDMI.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

UPDATE: I went back to the Comcast store and exchanged the box. Sure enough, it looks like I had a faulty box - maybe something with the hard drive. It sounded like it was constantly spinning. My new one is completely silent.

the blue screen is normal since you are switching from SD-HD or HD-SD

He also said this box is Tivo compatable(!?) and Tivo service will be part of the triple play and may just "be there" when Comcast rolls it out in my area! Is he BSing me? Another thing he told me is that the firewire port is active!
I will report back on my thoughts when it is up and running. Looks better in my rack than that 'ol grey box!

the 6412 has a 1120GB hard drive no 80GB

Tech said in Flint only 80gb was available. Don't know why.

Which makes little sense.

There are two versions of the 34 (all digital)/64 (digital and analog) HD DVR

X412 = 120 GB

x416 = 160 GB
