Lightbulb putting old harddrive into a new dvr?

Right now I am using io digital cable's Scientific Atlanta 8300HD dvr box. I plan on, however, getting a new dvr with more capabilities very soon, but to do this, i need to figure out if there's a way to take out the hard drive of this box & put it in the new dvr. I'm aware this would violate the lease of my dvr, but I'm going to ask you disregard this. I just need a technical way to do this because this requires knowing what other dvr's will work with the hard drive of my old dvr. So that is basically my question: is it possible for me to put my old hard drive into a new dvr..& if it is, which dvr will be able to accept this hard drive, seeing as they need to be capable with each other.

thank you very much.

I'm not sure how this qualifies as illegal behavior. I'm doing something that voids my contract but I don't believe this counts as "illegal."

You don't own that SA DVR - you lease it. You are not allowed to make modifications to it other than those allowed by either the cable provider or SA themselves - like add a HDD through a USB.

What?

You have a bunch of programming on it and you want to keep it for yourself?

I suppose we could have a philosophical discussion about whether violating a contract is illegal or not. I think the distinction you're aiming for is the difference between a civil offense and a criminal one: violating a contract is not a criminal offense, but it is a civil offense, and so I think that would still qualify as illegal.

Yes. But using a dvd recorder/vcr recorder diminishes quality & i've been having masses of trouble trying to upload it to my pc.

So for the rest of your life you want to bounce your recordings and hard drive from one DVR to the next.. weird.

Suck it up and copy to a DVD.

Actually, the long-term best approach, if this sort of thing really makes a difference for you, is to go with TiVo. I recently upgraded my TiVo S3 hard drive to 1 TB, but before I did so I used TiVo's TTG to move about 25 hours of HD programming to my networked PC, and then after the upgrade, moved the programming onto the new hard drive back in the TiVo. That's really the kind of thing that makes having a TiVo worthwhile.

Lee I disagree. If you look at the DVR menu, it allows you to copy the programming onto a VHS (or DVD) so how is this anymore illegal?

You are removing a piece of equipment (the HDD) that belongs to the cable provider and replacing it with something (another HDD) that was not the original piece of equipment that that DVR was born with.

The issue is not copying - but changing the physical makeup of the DVR itself.

You can't see this?

I certainly do, it's plain as day and Lee is correct, it is illegal to do so.

Yes, this is not a copyright issue -- it is a terms and conditions issue.

so there is no way to buy a dvr on my own & just switch the hard drives? if this is true, i will most likely do what you said. this is the best idea i've heard.
& to someone above you: yes. I have important recordings that I need & quality diminishes when you copy to a dvd. no need to be rude & call what i aim to do "weird."

the only dvr's you can buy are tivo and moxi. Why not get a dvd recorder and use the digital ports to transfer it digitally? (HDMI)

There is also now the new Samsung 3090/3270 HD DVR.

I would recommend sticking with the TiVo, for now. The Samsung is still very buggy, and the Moxi is also pretty new.
