What is HD?

I have a Motorola dual tuner Comcast HD box. I have a surround sound stereo/dvd hooked up to the the TV (LG 47" LCD). To operate the sound on Comcast I need to hit the AUX button on the stereo remote. The sound them comes in. I verified that the sound is coming in on all speakers, however much lower than when a DVD or CD is playing. For instance last night I watched a movie On Demand and needed to turn up the volume to 37. If that volume level was selected when a DVD was in then I would be blown out of the room. At 1/3 of the setting the DVD/CD sounds much clearer, crisper and louder. I have an HDMI cable connecting the TV to the Comcast Box.
Essentially, why is the sound much worse on Comcast, and is there any way for me to get the same sound quality when watching TV? Thanks, |

The answer is due in part to compressed signals.
http://www.winegard.com/offair/index.php Highest Quality DTV and HDTV source! DTV and HDTV received through an antenna provides a higher quality picture than cable or satellite with no compression. HDTV broadcasts also offer room filling, ultra realistic 5.1 channel digital surround sound. |

Also, in general digital or HD broadcast audio is lower in volume than analog. But with digital/HD you are able to receive the audio in DD 5.1, if broadcast in that form, which will give you a fuller audio experience. Albeit at a lower volume, which can be turned up. ![]() I would have to question the OP as to how they have the audio connected to the receiver? Also, is the cable box configured to send the audio in DD when available? DeadHead68

You could just turn the cable box up. It does have its own volume level too?!?!
