Default Hack or trash a Comcast DVR

I have a Comcast DVR. I have canceled my service after a very angry day of phone calls with them. They are now requesting that I physically drop off my DVR at my local office...45 minutes away. Well, that isn't going to happen. They can charge me the $500 fee for not returning it...they will never get a cent from me. I told them they could pick it up if they wish, but that it would be laying out in the street.

Anyway...I have two options now. I can toss the hunk of junk into the trash or I can try to salvage something from this box. It is a Motorola DCH 6416. Any ideas? I guess I could find a use for the hard drive inside. It's too bad I can't upgrade it with different software and use it as a PVR.

I would suggest returning it. For a piece of equipment at that value, they could prosecute you and it is a felony theft.

No it isn't. You do realize that felony statutes vary by state, don't you?

Not to mention the fact that Comcast will simply add the $500 to my balance and send me to collections. I am more than willing to let that sit on my credit history for years and never pay them a dime.

It's a small price to pay for all the crap I've gone through with them. I'd bash it to pieces with a hammer before ever giving it back to them.

Yeah my sister did the same thing with them after a horrible install service. She told them to come get they're crap off the front porch and hung up. That was about 2 summers ago. I think she said shes only got about 200 bucks left to finish paying them off since the collection company started garnishing her wages directly from her paycheck........

Good luck with "sticking it to them"

Wage garnishment doesn't work if you are self-employed. Not to mention the fact that wage garnishment is extremely difficult to establish in my state. It is almost exclusively used to repay monies owed to the state rather than a business.

No need to continue this dialog. You should be the one to move along as it is against the forum rules to discuss illegal activities.

And beyond the legalities, it is rude to suggest you'll do something that will effectively hurt the rest of us, since abusive and exploitative conduct by consumers ends up resulting in changes to policies and procedures that harm all of us.

Something illegal? It isn't illegal. The property isn't being stolen. In essence, I am purchasing the equipment. Hence the $500 charge...

You spouted off about the legality of this far too soon. You made it more than obvious that you haven't clue. Move along.

As if Comcast would not institute changes in policy that harm consumers regardless? Please...consider the company in question. Exactly what policy would you expect them to change as a result of this? Perhaps they would require new customers to purchase the units upfront? Not a chance. That will never happen. You're grasping at straws with this argument.

Treat Comcast with respect while they continue to disrespect their own customers? No thank you. I refuse to pay this much for some of the lowest quality HD in the country. I refuse to pay this much for some of the worst customer service in the country. I refuse to pay this much to a cable company than can only manage to add HD channels by removing others. I'll move along with my Motorola DCH 6416 in tow. I may even smash it to pieces and ship it to their corporate headquarters. Comcast is for fools or those poor souls who have no other choice.

Comcast: Pay more...for less

I am now the newest DirecTV customer. Twice the HD for half the price.

I understand you are upset with Comcast JRCorwin, as a lot of people seem to complain about them. I see you are venting over your issues with them, just make sure that you do not take it out on members here who offer an opinion, and you are fine with the venting process.

Don't excuse your deliberate misbehavior by pointing to what you think (erroneously, perhaps) is someone else' misbehavior. Mature people take responsibility for their own actions and don't try to deflect attention to try to avoid accountability for what they intend.

You should be considering the consumer in question. That's all you have control over.

Famous last words. "What harm could what I do cause?" Is it even worth answering you? Are you actually going to be receptive to learning how businesses work? Or are you just going to reply negatively regardless of the information I provide you. Based on what you've already revealed about yourself, I believe the latter, and so won't belabor the point.

Comcast actually does respect their customers. You perhaps think respect means kowtowing to your personal preferences. Respect is quite different.

Then don't. Unsubscribe, return the equipment, comply with the terms and conditions of termination, and be done with it, like a mature person.

This is really an important point. Where does this come from? What would take a reasonable person and make them actually think to effectively steal a piece of equipment? I believe entitlement mentality is at fault. Whenever consumerists in our society don't get what they think they're entitled to (an erroneous conclusion based on unfounded expectations) they love to attack big institutions because they desire control over both sides of transactions. It is not enough for them to be able to have the final say, accept or decline -- they must dictate what is offered to them, how much it costs, and how it will be delivered, as if society exists to serve only their personal needs.
