<Then you didn't read the notices.>

You mean the extended add on contract that they don't print for new customers.
I have not received a bill yet.

<I'm an American capitalist, not a socialist.>

I guess you won't mind telling your college educated offspring that you as a opportunistic capitalist, will be replacing him with a HB-1 visa person at less salary to save the company money. Or explain to him that he should have gotten a degree in "loss of Jobs" and the repercussions to our Country.
Or tell him there's a job opening in China.

I am not against Capitalism but only when it gets out of control as it has for the last 25 years or more.

Things have actually been "like this" for at least 35 years. Unlike you, I actually have confidence in American ingenuity and innovation, and our ability to continually re-invent ourselves and our society, to foster our future prosperity. I also believe in justice, and if you think that we "deserve" the good jobs, and the folks in China don't, then I'll have to disagree with you in the most definitive terms. To think our country is the only one that "deserves" the good life is arrogant in the extreme, and while it may be patriotic, it is (literally) inhumane. We don't need to keep other nation's down so that we don't have to work as hard. I suggest that such an ethnocentric perspective is no longer even an "American" perspective.

We both will have to keep our political opinions to ourselves; afterall this is a cable forum and occasionally Big businesss does get mixed in with political views.
In closing I will say this:
Comcast will be installed on the 9th and If I get problems like some other viewers get, I won't hesitate to cancel. I have been without Comcast or DTV for over 8 years (had both). How Comcast treats me again will determine if I stay as a customer.

I'm glad to end this thread on something I think we all should be able to agree on. The consumers' power comes from the willingness to do as you say, do without when the offering is not to your satisfaction.

To answer your questions... Do yourself a favor and call comcast and ask them to ship you a UPS label so that you can return the equipment or ask them to pick it up, setup an appointment... if not you will be charged $450 for it being unreturned... and for $450 that is one fancy paper weight...

jrcorwin:

This really sounds like a case of hurting yourself "to get even" with Comcast.

Your credit report is worth MUCH MORE than a 90 minute round trip to your comcast office to return the box.

And you get the satisfaction of once you get the receipt - you can tell the person off at the window - who is just an employee of the company trying to help customers.

OBTW - the illegal part - well that is part of the thread title:

HACK . . . or trash my Comcast DVR. It is illegal to discuss hacking DVR's - especially those you don't own.

Well, that isn't going to happen. They can charge me the $500 fee for not returning it...they will never get a cent from me. I told them they could pick it up if they wish, but that it would be laying out in the street.

Anyway...I have two options now. I can toss the hunk of junk into the trash or I can try to salvage something from this box. It is a Motorola DCH 6416. Any ideas? I guess I could find a use for the hard drive inside. It's too bad I can't upgrade it with different software and use it as a PVR.
I had them for 4 years and hated there service. I was force to return the boxes. But I didn't have the power cord. The stupid women in the drive thru window at Comcast said "did you know you'll be billed $5 per power cord" I had said what! But in all they returned my deposit with out deducting $5 off it.

What I would suggest for you is have them come and pick up their box. You can arranged that with them. You can also tell them you're in a wheel-chair and can't move since your a quad.

I did that with UPS and a packaged what was sent to my house. I told them I had injured my knee cap which I did do and couldn't walk or drive! I was not going to jump into my car to deliver it where the UPS driver making $17 to $22 an hour is suppose to know which house is what. Sure enough they picked up the tiny box and it was delivered to the guy or gal down 4 houses from me...

You spouted off about the legality of this far too soon. You made it more than obvious that you haven't clue. Move along.
Actually he is right. As a paralegal, you need to look at a couple things in your contract. 1) if there is no mention that you are responsible to send in the equipment, and 2) You must sedn them a certified letter posted and dated as to the pick up location, unless you have a authorized phone call recorded conversation with you letting them know of the pick up location of the unit. Other then that, you can then bring Comcast into court for a suit of damages related to all your legal fees, and any hardships it caused you. So go see the the psychiatrist and make up something that bothered you with comcast threats. And feel depressed. You'll actually win the case.
