Motorola announced an agreement to sell SurfBoard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems through Fry's Electronics stores across the U.S.

The retailer also is selling the SB6120 for $99.97 (not including tax or shipping) through its e-commerce site, Frys.com. The Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem has been available through the Fry's Web site since at least March, according to BroadbandReports.com.

The modem, certified by CableLabs for the DOCSIS 3.0 specification, should work with compatible DOCSIS 3.0 services, including Comcast's Ultra 22-Mbps downstream and Extreme 50 50-Mbps downstream services. Comcast director of corporate communications Charlie Douglas said customers can either buy an SB6120 modem at retail or lease one from the MSO.

Motorola spokeswoman Kalia Farrell-Adibe said the Fry's distribution agreement is a nationwide roll-out, but not tied to any specific MSO.

"We're witnessing the greatest advancement in DOCSIS cable modems in more than 10 years, and Fry's Electronics is at the forefront of the retail DOCSIS 3.0 movement," said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's broadband home gateways and software group. "We are pleased to work with Fry's Electronics and to provide consumers with high-end modem that will work with any form of DOCSIS network their cable operators provide."
