Default Verizon router OK as Comcast cable modem?

If I switch to Comcast, can I use my Actiontec M1424WR router as a cable modem, and not have to rent/ buy another cable modem?

I currently have Verizon Fios.

Well, first, a router isn't a cable modem. So you will still need the cable modem, because it is a different piece of equipment. You may also need a router.

Second, I don't know about the Actiontec, specifically, but I suspect there is a way to either turn off or have it ignore its MoCA nature, and just work as a regular router, in which case it would work with Comcast, but you would still need the cable modem, because it is a different piece of equipment.

Look for a cable modem capable of DOCSIS 3 as it is the newest iteration and will be used by most if not all cable modem companies in the near future. Today, though most providers still use DOCSIS 2.0 as their standard. You might want to check with your new provider to determine which would be best for you.

As noted you can use it as a router for your new cable internet service. I would expect you would get a free modem or low cost purchase of a modem through Comcast depending on what plan you go with.

FWIW here are the specs for the Actiontec device along with links to the user manuals, etc.

Before you purchase a modem from a third-party, ie. like Best Buy or Walmart or whatever, check the current Comcast list of supported modems.

Here is what Comcast has to say about DOCSIS 3.0 modems...
