Comcast is the WORST company I have ever dealt with. Their boxes are shoddy junk which rarely last a year, they cannot be counted on to provide the same service from week to week. Getting even the Guide Channels is an adventure in wonderland. And any conversation with them is like speaking to the Monte Python Village Idiot. They have 5 different charges for the same service and unless you stand on your head and holler, you will be stuck with the highest charge. Their "comcast Charges" leaflet looks like a Congessional budget bill with superscripts and subscripts that point to NOTHING! Their charges are as transparent as 100 feet of quicksand.

If any company EVER needed to be a tightly government regulated utility, it is COMCAST.
(Anybody here work for them...I read that they have a POWERFUL web presence to defend their shenanigans without ever disclosing their moles.)

They give new meaning to the word SLIMY!

I agree and will add that they have many lobbyists in Washington, D.C. to make sure their FUD and misinformation gets promoted. (Been there, watched it happen over and over again)

If you haven't canceled your Comcast subscription, or reduced down to limited basic service (broadcast channels only), then you are actively ratifying the value the Comcast is providing. If you seriously believe the negative things that you're writing, then do without Comcast.

Absolutely true. Drop them. Don't go with basic cable. If your local Comcast office is like mine it's not worth the money and aggravation. If you have another cable provider check into what they offer. Unfortunately you probably don't have one so you'll have to chose between OTA, which might work for you, or spend a lot of money on Fios or Satellite. Good luck.

I would switch to individual satellite, building wide sattellite, building wide antenna, Verizon FIOS, or another cable company in an instant if I could but there is no competition with Comcast in my building. It is an unregulated utility that I can not do without any more than I could do without electricity. That's how they can get away with criminally bad service at criminally high prices.

I, like many of my neighbors, are STUCK and Comcast knows it, so they go in with fangs bared sucking every last drop of blood from their customers while providing a comical level of service. The alternative is to toss out the TV set.

OTA is extremely limited in high rise buildings because
none will allow antennas stuck outside window.

Small wonder that of the top 100 companies serving the public, Comcast was rated DEAD LAST. If they were ever exposed to competition they'd disappear faster than the Titanic.

Default Comcasts "own" digital convertor boxes.

My friend just had installed these "small" digital convertor boxes by Comcast. They look similiar to the the ones you can get with a coupon. Are they different or can you use the coupon ones to do the same thing? What is Comcast pulling here?

Sounds like your building sucks. You should expect that if you live in a sucky place you're going to have sucky choices. However, that's not any cable company's fault. Your choices, including the choice about where to live, and including all the down-stream ramifications that that entails, rests squarely on your own shoulders.

Incorrect. It is a regulated utility. The price for limited basic is absolutely regulated. And the price for advanced services is deliberately not regulated because the government has determined that such regulation is inappropriate because there is competition for advanced subscription television services in every municipality in the country. (If they didn't determine that that was the case, they've been required to regulate the prices for the advanced services.)

Again: They are regulated. You just wish that the regulators were more consumerist biased, instead of balancing the needs of consumers and business, which is what the regulators do instead.

It is important for consumers to stop looking for excuses and start taking responsibility for their own decisions, their own actions, and the ramifications of their own decisions and actions on their own options.

It sounds like you have a lot of legitimate beefs with your landlord. I would hate to live with you live.

You're referring to DTAs. These are QAM tuners (i.e., for cable), while the "coupon ones" are ATSC tuners (i.e., for over-the-air).

DTAs are being deployed as part of Project Calvary, which will free up bandwidth currently clogged with old technology analog service, so that bandwidth can be used for highly-desired new services, like HD channels, and DOCSIS 3.0 high-speed Internet. I cannot wait for the DTAs to be deployed in my area, since it will be the pre-cursor to the introduction of some new services that I am very much looking forward to.

But at what cost?

If it isn't worth it, then you don't have to buy it. Not having the new services available is not as good as having the new services available and being able to decide whether or not to purchase them.

I currently have DOCSIS 3.0 high-speed Internet here in Acushnet, MA. According to Comcast the Boston MA market already has over 100HD channels in their lineup and it is heading my way by summers end. This came from a few field technicians and from Comcast themselves when I phoned to ask them about the 100 HD channels.

They didn't lie to me about the DOCSIS 3.0 when they said it was coming and I have it now. SO I hope the 100 HD channels are coming this way too... :-)

Many of those "100 channels" will be pay per view, RSN's and other premium channels that will cost more $.
