Angry Another reason to hate Comcast

Here's another reason to hate Comcast. They just sent me an e-mail mouthing off about their great services, including TNT in HD. Well, the NBA playoffs just ended yesterday and I suffered through all of them in ANALOG (yes ANALOG!) while praying for a miracle. So I sent the e-mail back to them and asked about new HD channels coming up, plus when we can expect ALL DIGITAL. Guess what? I got an automated reply that said to check their website. Of course there was nothing there, but I used their website e-mail form to ask the same questions again. Should I hold my breath?

Comcast ****s. I just saw a new Dish offer, and I'm closer than I've ever been to telling Comcast to go jump in the lake (that's a polite way of putting it).

Oh, and btw, while I am finishing this post I just got ANOTHER automated reply to the question I put in at their website. It's telling me that they will reply as soon as possible, and I should check the FAQ's at their website!!!

Thanks for letting me vent; I think I might have some built up hostility....

Yes I just read that same E mail about TNT {it said where available}. Well the NBA playoffs came and went , and it was "not available" in New Jersey. Bummer.

Yes, you are correct. Don't you just love fine print? And wouldn't it be nice if they only sent that e-mail to people who have it "available"? It's like offering a slice of cake to Kirstie Alley; she wants it, but can't have it.....

Unhappy False alarm

To be fair though, I could have opted out of getting e-mail from them. But I thought that I would want to know about what's going on in the HD world, not about what's NOT going on.

p.s. I forgot to mention another false alarm from those wonderful folks at Comcast yesterday. I saw the "Red Light" message indicator on my box when I got home and thought "Oh boy, here it is finally -- a notice that we now have TNT, etc...." But it turned out to be just another message advertising the Tyson/McBride fight on PPV. They can keep that. If I want to see a fight, I can just start a thread about ED plasma versus 1080p LCD's.

No. It's $44.95 from 9pm Sat til 5am Sun on PPV channels 197 and 501. It's coming from Wash, DC. I don't know what the source is, but Comcast isn't carrying it in HD.

Sorry you won't be able to see if "Iron Mike" can follow through with his promise to "cut him like a fish" in crystal clear Hi-Def.

p.s. I wouldn't pay a nickel to see that fight or any other. I'll just wait to hear what Wilbon and Kornheiser have to say on Monday's PTI....

It mentioned "where available". I saw an ad for it last nite on INHD channel. So I am assuming it will be in HD in my area; TNT is HD here. IMHO, that fight aint worth $45 or whatever they are asking for it.

Reminds me of the time I sent an email to Comcast service asking them when they were going to be getting the local CBS channel in High Def in my area (Seattle). The rep sends me an email back and says, not sure - you may want to check with CBS. You can contact them here: www.cbs.com.

OH REALLY? That rep got the reply of his life from me..I was not happy. I later received an apology from his manager for that moronic response, but kind of tells you the type of people you're dealing with over there.

Yeah, you know, it's amazing how many people I've talked to at Comcast who DON'T have HDTV. Personally, I would think that Comcast would do everything in their power to see that every employee has HDTV, whether it's free or even just at reduced rates. And they could work a deal for discounts on HDTV's. It would be like a very fun form of educational homework.

Can you please be a little more specific? When you say "they do not charge extra for HD channels", I wonder which ones you are talking about. I know of 3 "types" of HD channels:

1. Locals - (Affiliates like ABC, CBS, NBC, etc...) They are required to pass them through to you for free. If you have a QAM ATSC tuner built in, you can get them for free and without a box.
2. HD Packs - (like ESPN-HD, INHD1+2, DiscoveryHD, etc...) These are combined in a package like "Digital Classic" or "Digital Plus" for a fee in addition to basic and standard cable. They are not free -- at least not that I have ever heard of. Please double check this and let me know.
3. Premium - (HBO/Cinemax, Starz, Showtime/TMC) As you noted, there is a charge for these.

As for the box (STB), they do charge for it unless you have a Premium package like Silver, Gold, or Platinum. I was being charged $5.00 a month to rent the box for the past year. But I just signed up for HBO/Cinemax yesterday, and NOW the box is free. It wasn't when I had just the "Digital Classic" package.

I'm curious to hear confirmation from others as to whether or not this is the same situation for other Comcast subscribers around the country. Hope I haven't misunderstood your comments above. Thanks!

PHP Code:
1. Locals - (Affiliates like ABCCBSNBCetc...)
They are required to pass them through to you for free.
 If
you have a QAM ATSC tuner built inyou can get them

for free and without a box
PHP Code:
2. HD Packs - (like ESPN-HDINHD1+2DiscoveryHD
etc...) These are combined in a package like

"Digital Classic" or "Digital Plus" for a fee in addition
to basic
and standard cableThey are not free -- at least
not that I have ever heard of
Please double check this
and let me know

When I called, she told me they have a digital package combined with HD for 53.00 a month. I assume the price is included. I get all local channeles and the HD pack you listed above. She said there is no additional charge for the HD or for the box. She said all I do is tell them I need an HD receiver and they send it out like they would send out a normal box. I will be ordering it for the apartment in about a week or so..if youd like I will post the details after I actually order the service

Default New Comcast commercial

Has anyone seen the new Comcast commercial advertising "more local HD content than D*/E*......." It is running in my area (Flint MI) and I have to laugh. On comcast I get 1 PBS, 1 ABC, and 1 NBC all Flint locals, with my Sammy 451 and the RABBIT EARS sitting on top of my TV I get Flint ABC & PBS and LANSING CBS and PBS, and according to HDTV Pub in my area when I get my Outdoor antenna up (CM3020 w/ rotor, go big or go home....) I can get all Lansing, Flint, and Detroit. Including FOX, WB, UPN, and possibly PAX and an Independent Digital channel.

On a side note, I haven't tried it since I got the Comcast DVR, but my Sammy could not recieve the high def signals over the cable even though the 451 is supposed to be QAM compatible, could Comcast have blocked them, I did have the digital service prior, just not the HD-service. (I justified the $9 a month by cancelling HBO....)

Without CableCard, you can't get any scrambled digital channels, which is usually most of them... you should be able to get the retransmitted local digital stations, though...
