What is HD?

We just bought a new 42" Panasonic plasma and tried to hook it up tonight. We have cox cable and went to the cox store and got an HD cable box. I ran an HDMI cable from the box to the TV. I have not changed any settings on any components. i just plugged them all in and connected them. I did not get any instructions with the cable box. It is the scientific atlantis brand. I'm not sure of the model number. We did not get the DVR
Most of the channels from 48 on up do not work. The audio and picture goes in an out like it is loosing signal. The rest of the channels the picture is OK but it doen't look that great. The image still looks grainy and nothing like the plasma did in the store on the display. One thing I noticed, is that the short 6' coax cable that came with the box to go from the wall into the box is RG 6. The cable in the wall is RG 59/U. The people before us that lived in the house had cable. Would it matter if the cable running from the pole to the house and down the wall is 15 years old or older? What do I do to get this fixed? Would I need to call cox and have them rewire or do something else? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Last edited by hdnewby; 12-21-2008 at 11:17 PM. Reason: More information |

Not all channels will be digital. Not all digital channels will be HD. I do not know how your cable company operates. Sounds like there is still a lot of analog. What do the HD channels look like? What do the SD digital channels look like? What did your cable look like before you got the new TV? Sounds like you will need to call the cable company to get them to fix it. Keep in mind that digital should look good with less signal than analog. Analog may look bad with low signal. The higher number analog channels are likely to look worse than lower number analog channels.

Sounds like you need to get into the cable box menu and change the settings to 1080i and 16x9.
