Default Comcast DTV Transition Question

Hi y'all,

I live in New England and I have basic cable, and am upgrading to a new television with NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner.

My parents however have Digital Television on a non-HD CRT TV using a set-top-box.

They were wondering if they would have to continue paying for digital television after the transition. I'm sure they'd have to pay for PPV, DVR, and extras of that nature, but would they still have to pay for DTV service if everyone else is going to have it?

Also, quick question of my own, DTV transition is upgrading all/most resolutions to 480i/p correct?

Thanks!
(Sorry if any of those questions are noobish)

If your folks are receiving a signal from a cable company or a sat. company, nothing will change. The only change will be for people that have an analog TV and use an antenna for reception. The only thing your parents should be paying for is the rental of the set top box, and anything extra they order.

Right. Okay makes sense.

Oh yeah, so the resolutions will be upgraded to ATSC 480i/p with the transition then? Sorry, just clarifying some things for myself hah.

I have coax basic cable, so hopefully the quality'll improve if that's true.

All they are doing is getting rid of Analog OTA (over the air - need an antenna)

Analog NTSC and Digital NTSC are both 480i. 480P is called EDTV - extended definition

You may see no change in your image because cable companies are allowed to pipe analog NTSC to you.

But they want to get rid of analog cause it hogs bandwidth - which they need for HDTV (720P & 1080i).

That's what we all thought until today. Comcast Basic subscribers with an analog TV will need a converter box to see any channels above 30. They will be get 2-29 without doing anything. Comcast will provide three boxes to each household free of charge.

My pleasure . . .

Now . . . . . . .

Do you have any battery operated TV's in your home that you might have purchased years ago?

They aren't going to work after the DTV transition unless you get a DTV converter box and use a different antenna - and there are no battery operated DTV converters.

Florida - where I live - that is going to really mess things up - due to hurricanes. We lost power in 2005 for 8 days.

The TV stations did not cause they have emergency generators.

And we lost cable TV for 2 weeks.

The TV's in my parents house is the main Sony 27" Tube from, probably 2000, a bunch of older CRT televisions that are hardly watched.

At my place I've got a 19" Samsung which i'm using as a monitor and a Sony 42" Grand Wega LCD-Projection TV.

Upgrading to a Panny 42" Plasma within a few weeks and moving my old LCD to my sister's place.

- my mom still has a 19" Zenith color TV with the channel changer being a dial on the TV. It's older than my son who is 33

That Panny sounds real nice. I have a 50" Samsung Plasma.
