Default Comcast HD/DVR 4:3 Override issue

Ive got my box set to 480i on the 4:3 override setting but it keeps reverting back to 4:3 override=off. Its a pain because I have to power off the box and reset the setting and if Im recording a show it stops the recording. Does anyone else have this issue or is it a faulty cable box?

Does it revert back randomly? Do you power off the DVR when not watching TV?

I have my override set to "stretch" and it also randomly reverts back to "off' or "480i". I also have to turn the box off and reset it. It seems to happen every now and then and it has been happening since I have had HD from Comcast, which has been a few years now. There doesn't seem to be any reason why it does this.

Its completely random. I thought If I turned the box off that may cause it but sometimes Ill watch a SD program and it'll be fine and I'll go to a HD program and when I go back to SD its reset again to off.

Its insanely frustrating because my wife cant remember how to reset it to 480i and she'll watch shows with the bars on the sides. Ive got a plasma TV and Im gonna lose my mind if those bars get burned into the screen because she cant figure out how to change the setting. My LCD ghosted because of those bars so Im trying to be very cautious with the new TV.

That's definitely not normal. I would request a new DVR.

I have a similar issue, but it's the opposite. I want it to be "Off" and it keeps resetting after about two or three days to 480i. Wierd. I have TWC, but it seems as though they all use the same boxes and software. Let us know if a new box works.

Sorry to take so long to reply but I got a new box and this stupid thing does the exact same thing. Not only that but OnDemand is screwed up on it. I got the new box by adding a 2nd hddvr so I could put 1 box in the living room and one in the bedroom. The OnDemand works great in the bedroom but I get an error in the living room. Ill be headed to Comcast today to get yet another box.

Any solutions with new boxes?

After lots of trial and error, I did find that if in the HDMI set up, sub menu of the User Menu, I choose DVI instead of HDMI, my problem occurs less often. Just have to use RCA for digital sound from the box to the receiver (I like RCA better than Optical IMHO). These boxes seem to have software issues on the HDMI seeting in the submenu.

Hope that helps you.

Ok I think Ive found the issue while I had a few weeks off work for the holidays.

It appears that sometimes the HDMI signal gets dropped either when you turn off the device HDMI is plugged into I.E. TV or Stereo or sometimes when you change from a HD signal to a SD signal. If you lose the signal or you unplug the HDMI cable the box resets to factory settings. I know it sounds like a stupid idea but I managed to duplicate the issue quite often by simply turning off my stereo that the HDMI is plugged into.

I found only one way to solve the box resetting and that's by going back to component cables. So now Ive dumped 100 dollars in HDMI cables and bought a receiver specifically for HDMI and both are pointless. Ive had the components running for almost 2 weeks and Ive yet to have the issue again. I plugged the HDMI in to try again and within 30 minutes it reset. Basically these boxes are flawed in a major way.

If you are running Picture through a recveiver via HDMI, the box will revert back to the factory settings. You will have to reset them every time you turn the equipment off and back on again. I do this same thing daily. This is a Moto issue with the firmware as it will not accept switching/pass-through.

Which Moto box do you have? I have my 3412 running through my receiver via HDMI and have never had to reset it.

I have a 3412III (the same box as yours except with a 120g drive and yours is 160g) and a Sony STR-DG810 connected via HDMI and have never had to reset the DVR.

finally got Comcast to supply me with a 3412i today after arguing with the customer service rep and making them duplicate the issue on they're in store setup. After 20 minutes of digging thru the warehouse they found a 3412. Gonna hook it up tonight and hopefully put this issue to bed.

Hopefully it works because now Ive got an interference issue when using component cables.

well different box, same issue. So until Comcast and Motorola put out a firmware upgrade Im stuck using Component. Fortunately I solved the interference issue I was having.
