Default DVR DCH3416 4:3 Override

Need Help..

TWC to Denon AVR988 via HDMI to JVC proj HDTV via HDMI/DVI convert cable. Now, the problem.

I prefer the 4:3 override to be 'off', and the HDMI screen to RGB. I set everything, exit and it works fine. However after a while, few days or so, suddenly SD channels are skewed, and unable to decipher. The HDs are fine. I check, and the 4:3 ovveride is at 480i, and the RGB is YPbPr shows 4:4:4.

I reset, and it starts all over again.

Any ideas?

Welcome to High Def Forum. It does not seem to me that you should be messing with the HDMI color settings. You have no choice in this matter. I checked mine, the Color Space said YCC 4:4:4. This is as it was when I plugged it in. It is okay to choose 720p, 1080i, 4:3 override off, or on. Modern TV will take any of these. You say RGB shows YPbPr and 4:4:4. That does not sound like what I see on my box. YPbPr comes up for 1080i. I do not see it anywhere else. I would be tempted to say that is what your TV wants. Unfortunately, it does not explain why your SD channels do not work. You might try connecting the HDMI directly to the TV and compare that. Some people have difficulty passing the HDMI through a stereo. The best reason to do it is for switching. That is, if you have more equipment than you have inputs on the TV. You could use coaxial or fiber optic SPDIF to get digital audio to your stereo. I like coaxial, cause I just had a fiber optic cable die. I would rather that did not happen again. You might even have an extra RCA cord lying around you could use. Though I think the FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO is go to HDMI settings, and try to restore the defaults. That alone could solve your problem. Good luck.

Joe...thanks for the welcome and reply. Well, you are right, it is the YCC that has 4:4:4..sorry that I mis-wrote. Anyway, this has only started since I bought the Denon for the HDMI switch. But why does it stay ok for a while, then override what I set? Should I disconnect the power once or twice a week to reset? Is there a way to lock the settings, and not have them reset?

I have been very lucky with HDMI. The day I plugged it in it crashed once. After unplugging the power, it has not crashed since. It may be a good idea to connect the HDMI first and then connect the power to the box. As I pointed out, some people have problems with HDMI. It may be impossible for you to pass it through the stereo. It could help to connect it directly to the TV. Hopefully you will make the HDMI work so that you do not have to switch to component. Some people have no choice but to switch to component.

BTW I took a glance at the Denon on the internet. It does look pretty slick. A microphone included seems like a great idea. I have never been a big fan of graphic equalizers. Seems like a good way to make the sound worse to me. The use of a microphone would allow you to adjust the sound based on your speakers, and the listening environment.

Keep in mind that a cable box will not be capable of the more advanced surround sound that you could get from a Blu Ray, using HDMI. In my first post I did not speak of Blu Ray sound. If you do not pass the HDMI through the stereo, the sound could be just as good. I have used coaxial SPDIF, first for a DVD player, and now for my DVR cable box. I have heard that fiber optic is better. Fiber optic is breakable glass. I do not hear the difference. Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks for the info Joe. Yes, I really like the Denon, and the mic set up is pretty slick. I use the digital coax for sound and I am not having any issues with it. I too like it better the digital opt. My issues seem to be video, and perhaps a software issue with the box. I wish that there was a way to "lock" the user settings, so they wouldn't change.

Perhaps you could swap out the box. It really should not do that.

You are probably right. Thought that there might be another way.

Well, after lots of trial and error, I did find that if in the HDMI set up, sub menu of the User Menu, I choose DVI instead of HDMI, the problem occurs less often. Just have to use RCA for digital sound from the box to the receiver (I like RCA better than Optical IMHO).

Anyway, my question now is...is it possible that I need to replace my HDMI cables, and does anyone think that this might be a big part of the problem? I do notice the occasional "black blink" while watching the cable TV, but not from the upconverting DVD.

I didn't buy cheapo cables, http://www.cablestogo.com/product.as...3605&sku=40315, but I know that there are probably some better ones out there.

Thanks.

I have the exact same issue mine gets reset back to 480i everytime I turn my tv off. I have a plasma and a yahmaha avr and the 3416 dvr all connected by hdmi. I can turn off the dvr or the avr and the settings stick, but if i turn off the tv they get reset?? It drives me crazy!!! Can comcast disable the auto reset somehow in one of those greyed out settings that we can't access?

It has absolutely nothing to do with your setup. Its a firmware issue in that model cable box. Theres a few posts on here with this exact issue and I personally have been dealing with it since October. I had to go back to component cables because this drove me crazy for so long. Ive switched boxes about 5 times and they all do the same thing. Ill find the previous posts for ya.
