Default Fix for Green Screen when using HDMI

Hi Everyone,

I have been racking my brains trying to fix my boyfriend's new Samsung TV which gets the dreaded "green screen." Being a former PC Tech I knew there had to be a work around. The issue seems to be an incompatibiity with the receiver and cable box which sees it as a repeater.

Today I actually found it by accident fooling around with the cable tv box settings. BTW it is a Motorola Cable box.
This went all the way to the Engineer who had no solution as you all have experienced.

Here is what I did...
Turned off the Cable Box and pressed the menu setting on the motorola remote till a white screen popped up.
Scroll down and disable the overide settings turn to off
Then scroll down to additional hdmi settings and hit enter
Change it from hdmi to dvi
Then exit and turn your cable box back on
Your screen will flicker a bit and then focus back to normal

Now try changing your channels from sd to hd it should be fixed.
It fixed his today and I hoped it helped you...

Let me know...this is my first posting....

Cheers

I have been going through literally the same "dilemma" since I bought my HD TV last year.
Thanks for the instructions.

Who else believes this is a good solution to the problem??

Default update

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know it has been 24 hours since we tried that fix and he said the TV still has NO GREEN SCREEN OF DEATH...as of this morning. (fingers crossed here)

I cant predict this will work for everyone....but it is worth a shot if you are having that trouble...

He has a Samsung 42" LCD TV with a Samsung Home Theater that has a built in DVD player in the receiver. Also using Comcast with a
Motorola Cable box...have switched them out several times.

Funny how Comcast told us they dont support HDMI or problems if you are using a Home Theater....but they rent you a box with an HDMI connection and on their website they say to get a Home Theater to enhance your HD experience....that sounds like an implied warrantee to me.... just my two cents.

Their logic is that you can use component and a Home Theater and not lose any quaility. There's basically no headaches like this with component.

I'm gonna wait until a few more of the "experts" on this forum chime in before I try it... or at least wait until more people say it worked for them also.

Default My Fix

I have yet to experience green screen with my Moto STB however, when I got my Toshiba 410 DVD recorder I did get green screen.

My fix for this was to unplug the HDMI in my TV, and plug it back in again, no green screen. My TV has 2 HDMI plugs.

Smile Variation on fix

Hi HDRobbie,

Thanks for the help. I have a Toshiba 40RV525U and Motorola DCH3416 cable box (from Comcast), with HDMI cable. Whenever I changed channels from HD to SD I would get the green screen of death. I did your Override to Off and HDMI Settings to DVI fix. This fixed the green screen, but killed the audio. But when I changed the HDMI Settings back to HDMI (still kept Override to Off), that fixed everything.

Thanks,
Mark

Exclamation Having trouble

I am trying this fix that was posted, however, when I turn off the cable box, no matter how I press the menu button on my cable box remote I don't get a white screen. My remote is a Charter Communications remote, not actually a factory motorola remote specific to the box - does that matter? The green screen is about to drive me crazy!

I also have have a Toshiba 40RV525U , but a Motorola DCH6416 like the above poster.

Thumbs up So far so good

I called Charter and they told me to press "menu" and "guide" on the box and then I got the main menu to disable the hdmi over-ride. The Charter guy actually had heard of the "green screen", but only about 2 instances. Rare but it obviously is a problem - so, I have turned it on and off about 10 times and it works! So thanks a ton!!

HDRobbie,

You also want to make sure you have the latest firmware updates for the Samsung TV as they don't play well with other equipment sometimes, due to HDCP and HDMI. In many cases a simple firmware update resolves those HDMI issues.
