Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD TWC hdmi audio issues

Okay, so i recently upgraded to the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD DVR with my Insignia 42 inch Plasma hdtv. I currently have Time Warner Cable as my cable provider. I can't say I'm super happy with them, but that's another issue. I recently purchased an hdmi cable to get the best display and sound possible. I was using the component cables TWC provided and they worked find. Well, today after I hooked up the hdmi cable and figured out how I needed to switch the audio options on the dvr to hdmi and everything seemed to be working fine. Well, now all of a sudden after changing channels, presumably from 720p to 480 the sound dropped for all my hd channels and a great number of sd channels as well. What do I need to do?

Update: I rebooted the box and the sound works fine now. I'm just wondering with what I've been reading throughout the forums here if this will be a regular occurrence.

Unfortunately I do not have your box. But my audio drops out every now and again. You can do some searching here, Wikipedia, or maybe even the manufacturer of your boxes web site. Find detailed instructions on how to use the remote. I programmed the remote to mute the box. When the audio goes out I mute the box. Then I unmute the box. This seems to force the audio back. I hope you can solve the problem. Good luck.

Using 8300 HD with HDMI cable...box set to Digital audio out:HDMI...I have lost sound for no reason 3 times. The HDMI cable is not the problem, as I verified.

Last time this happened, I went into settings and Digital audio out had changed itself to Dolby Digital Out. That expalins why the sound went off. I changed the setting back to HDMI and sound immediately came back. Cablevision says they have never heard of this happening, that I should exchange the box. I have a funny feeling this maybe on all the boxes. will report back.

I have the 8300HDC box from TWC and have had similar issues. I was told that there "known" software problems that were being analyzed which included volume dropouts, reboots and frozen screens. TWC could not give me an expected time for the fix. The only "temporary" fix was a regular (1x, 2x daily) reboot of the box. They told me that I could get another box that may or may not have the same problems.

Sorry for not having a resolution - I just wanted to let you know that you were not alone in having this frustrating problem.

I'm in Alabama with TW.
last night I was changing the channels and the TV went dark.

First thing I did was hook up the regular cable to see if TV was ok and it was.
I called TW tec support, told them what happened. They went through the reboot with me, all was ok.
This morning I turned on the TV and in about 5 minutes it went out again. I rebooted and it's working now.
I called TW tec and ask if this happens alot or should I get TW/RR to come out and replace.
The tec said this rarely happens, it must be the weather.

So I will go in Monday and talk to them.

I am still having this issue also...I was probably mistaken when I said the box changed its setting. But it has happened a few times now where changing settings to Dolby and back to HDMI does not fix the problem. I need to re-boot.

You may want to do a site search for 8300HDC. There are numerous threads addressing issues with this unit, more specifically the OCAP/Mystro software utilized. I've had one since Dec 07 and problems abound. The "soft" reboot is a little faster than unplug and replug. Press and hold the Channel + and Channel - and Info button on front of unit. TWC has done at least one software "patch" in my area. Now, I reboot only once a week or so instead of every two days

There could be 2 issues here with the 8300 HDC. First -what code are you using ? 0801 has HDMI issues. 2nd - 8300 HDC is only HDMI 1.1. If your TV is HDMI 1.2 or higher you need a RNG 200 box.

I just acquired a Sharp LCD - HD and connected with HDMI cable which all seems to be fine. However, when I connected my DVD-R to the DVR through Composite from OUT2 connectors, I get audio but no video. Any ideas? I tried to get Cisco/SA to discuss without any luck.

We recently purchased a new Sharp HD TV, and hooked it up to the existing Scientific Atlanta 8300 cable box. When changing channels or selecting HD On Demand programming from Comcast, audio sometimes drops out. Comcast came and found nothing wrong, but acknowledge its not the TV at least. I also had Geek Squad from Best Buy come out, and they suggested checking internet for other people having these issues. Glad to see I'm not the only one with these problems, though most of these postings are much older. The Geek Squad guy suggested having Comcast change the audio output of the box from Dolby to PCM, but he couldn't figure out how to do it himself. A higher level Comcast technician is supposed to get back to me this week.

I'm in Toronto, Canada and my provider is Rogers. My issue is intermittent Audio outage that appears to come back every few days (used to be longer like weeks) and it goes away with a power OFF/ON.
Well that takes 4-5 minutes to complete as the boot-up is excruciatingly slow.

The issue started after my operator upgraded the SW (I know this because the day before the issue appeared for the first time I saw the upgrade message on the device little display and the cable box).

I read on of the forums this issue was happening to other users including TW users in the States. I'm wondring if a solution has been found yet. If not, doesn anybody know how I can revert to previous SW. Generally speaking these devices have two SW banks and chances are the older version is still there. I'm out of luck with the operator as my box is well out of warranty now.

Is to disable 480i output formats in the boxes. In this box you need to hold "Guide and info" down on the front of the box until a box appears, enter the "Advanced setup wizard and disable both 480i standard and 480i widescreen. This fixes jittery pictures, intermittent audio issues especially at channel changes and a whole myriad of other previously unexplainable symptoms with various brands and models of tv's. All other cable boxes have these issues and some brands of tv's are more effected than others. Many of these newer Cisco boxes are making it harder to find the info to access these menus if you can find the info at all
