Last evening, our cable company had a commercial discussing HDTV signal compression. They talked about how DTV and Dish both compress the signal and how much loss you would see. Then they said that they DO NOT COMPRESS their HDTV signal.
Can this be true? I am signing up now that they have added 8 more HDTV channels, but I did expect to see a compressed signal. Currently, I see only the QAM locals and they seem compressed to me, based on using OTA for a while till they started QAM broadcasting. |

I think cable passes on signals not that much different than the way they recieve them. I could be wrong. There is always compression though. It would be impossible to do it any other way. (You think OTA is better? I tried it for comparison, it looked the same to me.) My impression of D* new mpeg4 is that it was designed to use more compression. It is altered from the way they recieve it. I like my cable. Way back when, before I had HD, I was very disappointed with D*. Guess I am biased.
