If i drop my cable (drop premium/hd services) and go with basic, with my hdtv having a QAM tuner, can I still get locals in HD?

Yes. I don't have digital cable (still on analog cable) or a box but I can still watch 7 or so local HD channels. I'll probably continue with this for the next year or so or until there is more plentiful HD content out there.

Yes, but I have the expanded basic so I'm not 100% positive of that. But having basic is like having an antenna, that is, the cable provider gives you all local channels that would normally get through an antenna - including HD. If you are really looking to save some more $ and you live near a big city then maybe get an antenna. You will get local HD channels for $0 a month!

HDTV 42 " Sharp 1080p HDTV internal tuner - connected COX Basic Cable service. Yesterday all of the Local Channel HD signals became unavailable. 12.1 12.2 5.1 15.1 etc. I rescanned my Channel search and now those HD signals are no longer available in Cox Basic Cable. Be wary of marketing strategy of COX. I looked at the listing for COX TV on the COX AZ site and the "HD Local Channels" are programmed for channels in 701-783 range. I am trying an experiment and adding "digital" service ($45 more per month). I will post results later. COX Cable service and access to local commercial TV HD signals will most likly not be "free". Stay tuned.
