Default No Sound on ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD

Originally posted in Local HDTV Info and Reception. It was suggested I post this in the Cable TV forum:

I have digital cable with Time Warner in SoCal area. However, I'm not using a set top box; I have a Panasonic LCD TV TC-32LX700 which has a built in digital tuner. I also have a Philips DVD/HDD recorder with a digitial tuner.

The TV tunes in all available HD channels. However, when I select the channels for ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD, the video appears briefly and then disappears.

On the other hand, the Philips DVD/HDD recorder tunes in all HD channels. The video for ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD work fine, but I get no audio. I get audio on all other HD channels - KNBC-HD, KCBS-HD, KABC-HD, etc. - audio/video work fine.

I have the Philips device connected to the TV in two ways - with component video and analog audio, and with HDMI. I choose the source from the TV. The results are the same with respect to ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD; excellent video and no sound.

The only thing I haven't tried is using the digital audio output from the Philips device to see if there is any audio signal for ESPN/2 HD.

Any ideas what is different about audio from ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD? or is it the way Time Warner sends the signal that is different?

Well, first off, you DO NOT have digital cable unless you have the TW set top box. What you are receiving are the QAM channels which TW is currently broadcasting in the clear. They just are not broadcasting the audio portion of the ESPN channels. You will continue to receive the channels you currently see until TW decides to scramble them. Then you MUST have the set top box ( or a cable card ) to receive anything other than the basic cable to which you currently subscribe.
