Cable HD and DVR

I have a new HD TV but I'm only currently subscribing to analog cable and internet service. I noticed that I am getting some HD channels. Can I buy my own DVR and use that to record those HD channels?

You can buy DVD Recorder with HDD so you would have DVR which you could burn to blank DVDRWs also. The digital tuners are getting out there for DVD SDTV. HD DVD Recorder cost more than SD DVD Recorder though. SDTV DVD Recorder doesn't have HDMI only Component Video.

Go to Wal-Mart and pickup the best Funai sold under Magnavox it's around $179 it's black and it's doesn't have HDD though. What I use to do was to buy a bunch of blank DVDRW and use those to record. Erase and record.

So you can do it, or you can build a HTPC with DVR software like SAGETV and get HDTV Tuner Card and install 500GB or 1 TB HDD and record everything you want.

I'm currently using a Tivo unit that allows basic Tivo (don't have to pay for) but it doesn't record in HD. I'm just trying to find out if something like what I'm doing now is possible with HD.

Tivo sales an HD model and i beleive they offer a stripped down model for not so many clams (not THX)

There are two stand-alone TiVo models that support HD: The TiVo Series 3 (which is the premium model, with THX certification, etc.) and the TiVo HD (which is the budget model, at about $250 + the cost of monthly service).

TiVo Basic Service was available on some of the TiVo Series 2 units with DVD burners in them. It is no longer available with either of the units that support HD. As a TiVo owner, you can purchase a new HD-compatible TiVo and also purchase lifetime service for it, for $399 for the lifetime service. Time is running out on the lifetime service offer, though.
