New to this forum - Like 8300 except limit to 2 recordings at same time, any solutions around like renting a second recorder? Two boxes in same room would pose problems with remote control and switching back and forth although my HDTV has multiple HDMI inputs. From reading this forum apparently Time Warner supports SATA external drives, any experience? Which are best. Stand alone or kit?

More than 2 recordings at the same time... that's a lot. Never before have I read a post expressing that need.

The cable can have a splitter with each of 2 OUTS going to their own SA8300HD. What needs to be looked at is the signal quality to each.

Start by looking at the signal for "Tuner" on page 1 of the diagnostic page (accessed by going to the DVR and pressing and holding the "Select" button until the "Mail" icon flashes then pressing the "Info" button) and a correct signal is between -12 dB and +12 dB (0 dB being optimum).

A splitter will cost about 4 dB so that if the signal is already at -9 dB, it will not be strong enough to provide goos reception.

I have an external SATA drive connected to my SA8300HD. A WD (Western Digital) drive is best. Close attention must be given to the buffer performance of the drive so that it does not come in conflict with the internal drive. Here in Canada we have more experience with external drives for DVR because we have been buying DVR's from cable companies for years. So check this thread: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=23773

Hello,

Maybe it won't help, but we never know? I had the same problem with the remote of my SA Explorer 8455. The only solution I found was to put a scrap of adhesive tape in front of the IR receiver of the box. And then the remote works properly.

Default Just swapped HDC for HD box...observations

Had the SA 8300 HDC and the delay on the remote was ridiculous. Whether it was inputting channels or using various ffwd/rewind speeds, the delay was very noticeable and wreaked havoc on my enjoyment. Also, the on screen volume slider(via vol buttons on remote) used to revert to TV remote's and back to Cable's remote at random..very annoying. And lastly, the WD DVR expander I had purchased doesn't work with the HDC..dooh.

Anyway, just swapped it out for HD version, which is an older one, and right off the bat, the remote delay is gone..thank god. I can hit various ffwd levels in a heartbeat..The box is so much more responsive to the remote than on the HDC..Someone messed up big time with that one..can't believe they actually released it w/o working out that bug. On the other hand the HDC had a nice feature where you could quickly see what was on HD, Sports, Kids..etc. The HD has a similar feature, but the HDC's was more developed..oh well. Actually, they say TWC is working to add that functionality via signal so I wouldn't have to swap boxes again.

Bottom line, I've only had the HD for 1/2 day but already I'm loving not having to deal with that annoying delay issue while inputting on remote. I had that HDC for 5 months and I's say I was able to successfully input a channel, w/o haing to re-enter, only a handful of times..lol. Additionally, I'm hoping my WD will work with this one...it's supposed to.

I have a Samsung Series 3 LCD TV with the Samsung HT-Z410 Digital Home Theater System both connected to my Scientific Atlanta 8300 HDC Cable Box. The home theater system is hooked up via Digital Optical and I use HDMI for the video.

Problem : The Device Audio: Digital Output settings on the Scientific Atlanta switch from Dolby Digital to HDMI every time I turn all 3 of my devices off (Cable, TV, Aux in that order). I want it to stay on Dolby Digital Output so I receive Dolby Digital sound from my home theater system. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem so that the settings stay locked in?

If you select CBSHD, for instance, you should have Dolby Digital at all times. You could set your SA8300HD to power up always tuned to CBSHD.

Ok, so basically what you're saying is the only solution to get it to stay on Dolby Digital is to change the poweron selection to the CBSHD channel? I currently have it set on Last Channel Poweron, which I prefer, but if that is the only solution then I guess I will have to go with that. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately I just turned all of my devices off for about 10 min and when I turned them back on the Digital Output setting was back to HDMI instead of Dolby Digital. I've noticed that when it is on HDMI the Samsung Home Theater displays LPCM and plays sound at a low volume but when it's on Dolby Digital it displays the Dolby Digital Logo and it plays sound at a much louder level - which is why I want it to stay on Dolby Digital. It's very frustrating switching the setting every time I turn the devices on.

I'm not using HDMI for sound so I don't know why it keeps going back to HDMI as the audio output setting. My HDMI is connected to my TV and SA8300HDC, not my home theater system. I also have my TV speakers set to off. Any other suggestions?

As you are finding out, the SA8300HDC defaults the audio to HDMI when an HDMI cable is connected. That's just the way it is. I guess they figured if you are using HDMI, that you are wanting both the audio and video to be via HDMI. There's two ways I can see around this. Switch to component for the video. Then the audio is defaulted to DD. Or do not power off the SA8300HDC.

I guess I'll stick with the second option because I paid too much damn money for this HDMI cable to just be sitting in the drawer. Thanks for the help though. Do you know if there are any other cable boxes that will allow you to choose the default audio no matter what is connected?

It's too late now, but hopefully you didn't buy the overhyped/overpriced Monster brand. The below cable will have the same quality.

Angry scientific atlanta 8300 dvr hD

i have 2 boxes--living room and puter room-the problem i have is =digital delay--thats what the serviceman told me it is-when i change channels i get a blank screen for at least 5 seconds---if not more-before it locks in the station---quite annoying when you are channel surfing---my provider is cablevision-NJ-sometimes the screen goes pink--no pic--he said that was signal loss--and to unplug box and reboot---quite annoying in the middle of a show since it takes at least 5 mins to reboot!!also why in the middle of a show when you hit record and go to bed does it go back about 20 mins from where you started recording?NOT like hitting rec on a vcr where it starts from there--for what i pay a month youd think the bugs in the system were worked out--im NOT cablevisions ginnypig!

so i had a 8300hd box for the past 2 years with passport software in so cal twc and i loved everything about it.
just this week they downgraded to the pos mystro . i hate it but i have to deal with it. so i go and try to exchange my 8300hd to see if they have one with passport but nah they didnt. so they gave me an 8300hdc and yea the channels do change slower but i mostly look at recorded programs and rarely channel surf. so i bearly noticed that i have every single channel except for ppv. but i only subscribed to hbo/max, the regular digital boxes have what i pay for . but the 8300hdc has every single channel.so i look through the little holes on top of the box and notice that i have one of those cable cards it says powerkey multistream.well thats what i can read. i dont want to take it out.so i call twc and ask what im being charged for and the only premium im being charged for is the hbo/max for $15 a month.and i didnt mention that im getting all those other channels for free.. ha would u? nah didnt think so. so i was wondering if any other hdc owners has cable card installed because i thought u have to pay for them.or maybe the last owner of that box had a card and twc forgot to take it out...idk.. also none of my on demand channels work either it says to recieve this channel call customer care but im afraid to because then maybe the premiums might go out so im just gonna see how long this lasts.

Cool How to set up external drive on DVR?

Hi group!

I have the SA Explorer HDC DVR from my cable company, but I keep running out of space for recorded programs. I'm wondering if there is a way to connect an external harddrive to extend the hours of recordings I can keep?

Thanks a ton!

Cheers,
James
