Default Cablevision NJ HDTV

Hello,

When I bought my Sony Wega 960XBR a few months ago, I hooked the coax from the cable company to my tv, scanned for channels, and all of the HD channels came in for free. Now none of them do, they are scrambled... Did they just recently do that? I thought that some HD channels would be free since I already am a cable customer.

I wanted to buy the ATI HDTV wonder, but now I guess it will be scambled on that too...

What are my options? I dont want a cable box, because I hate the IR blaster things... Should I get a cable card?

Thanks.

How are you getting digital channels now? With a cable STB? If no STB, you are subscribed to digital service, right? If not, your getting free service.
If you go to a cable card ask your cable company if it is 2-way. Most cards are only 1-way which sucks because you do not get the cable guide and the info that you can display for each program. Also, if you have DVR capabilities on your STB (if you have one) that feature is lost also. If the card is 2-way then you get all features of a STB except DVR. Also, not all TV's are compatable with cable card. Have your TV model number handy when you call your provider.
Note about the HD PC card. PC Magazine did a review on them last month and it was not pretty for any brand. Better to hold on to your greenbacks and wait another year to shake out the bugs.

You need to get their HD cable box. Guess you were lucky for a minute.

Unless you have one of the new sets that has a cable card reader on your TV, you must have a cable box. On the Cablevision bill there is a notice that one get get a card for a few dollars a month without a box. Some of the new Mitsubishi sets have this slot. As mentioned above, you can't order programing or get a the cable menu using this set up. I have the SA 8300 HD DVR from Cablevision NJ. I have the full package of stations and I get every station available including the dozen or so HD stations (700s).

However all is not wonderful with the SA 8300 HD. Besides a few programing problems that they have not worked out yet, the remote really is terrible. It's way too small with too many buttons. At least the fast forward, rewind and play should have been back lit. It's really hard to find them while watching a program in a darkened room.

To my eyes an incredible DLP picture!

Don't know if it will help, but you can sign an online petition asking Cablevision to add the YES HD feed.
http://petitiononline.com/cvyeshd/petition.html

I have also sent an e-mail directly to Cablevision politely telling them what a$$holes they are.

You need to subscribe to the digital tier, and get a CableCard for your TV... it will unscramble things & give you back what you had.

The ATI card will do you no good... it's not digital cable compatible, OTA only.
