Ok I'm having some issues with this thing. I'm trying to enter the setup menu by pushing guide and info at the same time and nothing is happening. The box keeps changing the aspect to 480 everytime I change it. I have the box powered off and the tv on but nothing shows up when I push the 2 buttons. Am I missing something?

Of course, "support" is one loaded word. It is 100% true that the version of Passport that supports SATA external drives does so with one large bug that scotches it's use for many (AKA, the trick play bug, wherein if you pause a recording, you can NOT use fast rewind/fast forward).
Hello paulc,
I wish I'd read this before buying my eSATA drive I have an 8300HD running TWC's Passport. Is there anything I can do to work around this annoyance? I tried searching for 'trick play' but got 100's of hits, presumably because the search function searched for either word.

Actually while I'm at it, can someone answer [or point me at a doc/site]:
- why does this limitation [i.e. no ff/rew from pause] occur?
- is it really a 'bug' or an intended feature to dissuade people from fiddling with their box?
- are there any other features that are disabled when eSATA is connected?
- does this only happen if the box has used up its space and is storing the live buffer across eSATA?

Thanks in advance,
Pete

I am having trouble connecting and getting my speakers to play sound from the TV. I have tried overriding the HDMI as suggested in the 8300 manual. Any ideas? I have the HD box connected to my DVD/AMP via an aux input (red/white cables)

I just use the spdif out of tv to my yamaha receiver.

You cannot buy an 8300HD SA box. There are currently only 2 companies that you can buy your own box from.

http://www.moxi.com/us/home.html
http://www.tivo.com/

You will still have to rent a cable card from Comcast for either of the above.

Hello All,

I got a problem connecting my 8300HD with a HDTV via component cable (YPbPr).
Currently I'm connecting the two devices with HDMI cable and everything works correctly, however I got a new device and I like to use the HDMI for that (already using a third device with HDMI so there goes the 2 HDMI connector on my TV).
I connected the 8300HD with the component cable to the HDTV but I'm only getting sound (In the settings menu I set digital audio to "Other").

Here is what I did:
1. Unplugged the power from the 8300HD
2. Unplugged the HDMI
3. Connected the component cable (correctly, checked and tried 3 different cables too)
4. Waited until correct time displayed
5. Turned on the TV (selected the correct Component Input)
6. Turned on the 8300HD

No picture, only sound.
Then I tried the setup wizard (Guide and Info button at the same time...), without the HDMI plugged in (still no picture, however when I plug the HDMI back in, it works correctly).

Do I have a faulty component connector on the back of my 8300HD?
Is there a "secret" setting where one can change the video output from HDMI to component?

Thank you your help!

I realize it's been months since you posted this question, but I thought I'd answer anyway...

On my TimeWarner DVR I can change that setting by choosing settings on the remote, then devices, and then scroll through the menu until I find that audio output.

NOTE:

The link in the OP had expired. Now there is a new up to date link with a host of downloadable PDFs on the 8300.

Default DVD recording with the 8300hdc

Is there a post somewhere that explains the step involved in recording a show from the 8300hdc to a DVR? I have hooked up the hardware using the manual, but cannot seem to get anything to record..It plays fine through the system, but recording is a no-go.
A friend of mine said that he thought you had to set the system (somewhere) from digital to analog, and that you couldn't record while viewing.
Any ideas?/ thoughts? Thanks-

What DVD recorder are you trying to use?

You can NOT record from a SA 8300HDC to a DVR. See the FAQ.

http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/prod_faq.html

You can record from a SA 8300HDC to a VHS VCR. See page 23 of the Users Manual.

I don't have the DVR version, but I just moved to a Comcast area that uses the SA boxes (I had previously lived in a Motorola area). I have the SA 8300 and this thing gets really warm. Is that normal?

I have a thermostatically controlled fan in my media closet that kicks on at 100, and the cable box is by far the warmest thing in the closet (even more than my Xbox). I have it set apart from everything else (using 2 inch pieces of PVC pipe), but it still stays hot on both the top and bottom.
