We recently bought a new HDTV and have had Time Warner hooked it all up with the SA 8300 HD DVR and its Remote. I have since hooked up things and set the DVR Remote set up to turn on/off my DVR, Panasonic TH-42PX600U HDTV and DVD Player/Surround Speakers.
The DVR Remote can control most of the TV settings, but I find that I have to use the TV Remote to select and change the TV Input setting (Comp 1 for the TV, Video 1 for DVD Player, Video 2 for VCR) and also the Aspect Ratio setting (4:3, Full, Fill, Just -- we usually prefer the Just setting and have to change the AR occasionally, depending on the channel/show).
I haven't dwelved into all the settings possible with the DVR Remote yet, but was wondering if this remote is able to change the TV's AR and Input Settings. Or is it the norm to have to use the TV remote along with the DVR remote whenever we want to change these?
I've heard some about a Harmony Remote -- and know nothing about it. But does it control everything or do you still have to use the TV Remote for the AR and Input settings?
We haven't gotten too much further in the use of the DVR yet, so haven't really checked out what other controls might be benefitted by having a Harmony Remote. I hear they cost quite a bit, right? $100 or more?
Would like to learn more about the capabilities and what most HDTV users prefer with regard to using remotes. Thanks in advance for any response.
The 8300's normal remote had several "mode" buttons based on what equipment you want to "control." Still, there are some commands that can be sent to the TV even while the mode button is set for the cable STB. I CAN change the inputs on my TV by using the 8300's remote when I switch it to "TV" mode. You need to actually read the documentation that came with the 8300, it's all in there.
