Default Cablevision HDMI??

Quick question, a friend of mine just got an HD tv and HDMI cable. He switched to a HI-DEF box with cablevision but they told him the only way to get a box with and HDMI output is if is a DVR and you have to pay for their DVR service. He already has TIVO so doesnt need the DVR. Is this true that the only cablevision boxes with HDMI hookups are the DVR boxes? I have a DVR from them so its not a problem for me, sucks for him if its true though.

Thanks

Not sure. I have the DVR box and I am using HDMI. I don't know about the non-DVR boxes. Sux if that's true, though it wouldn't surprise me.

Not using HDMI won't kill him. There's not much difference between DVI/HDMI and component video. Chances are his STB has a DVI port, and it will definitely have component video outputs. If the box has an active DVI port, he can get a DVI-HDMI cable to connect his STB to his TV. If not, he'll use the component video cables.

I have Comcast here in the San Francisco bay area and was told by them I have to upgrade to a DVR box and pay $9.95 more if I want HDMI. I was also told they do not support the DVI output (the box I have has DVI). But I talked to another Comcast rep and he said the DVI should work and I should try using it. So I bought a cable from Wal Mart and it does work. However, I'm seing green flourecent tint when I think it should be gold. All other colors like reds and blues are perfect. Any ideas?

In general , from most cable set top boxes, component cables will look equally as good as the digital port, so I would not knock yourself out.

So if component cables will look equally as good then why get the HDMI cable?? Is it just a matter of preference or what type of hook up is avaiable to you??

1. HDMI is one cable that carries audio and video. If you use component video cables, you have three + a digital audio cable.

2. Component is analog, whereas HDMI is digital. No converting from digital to analog and back to digital.

3. HDMI supports copy protection. In the future, component video will simply go away as there's no way to enforce HDCP in the old analog system.

4. Upconverting DVD players need HDMI to upconvert to 720p and 1080i. Those players only upconvert to 480p with component (although the Oppo 970HD can upconvert via component to 720/1080 with a firmware hack).

5. Some sets only have one component video input, but have two HDMI inputs. Unless you buy a switch or a receiver/amp that has multiple component inputs, you'll have to use HDMI for at least some of your devices.

Right now, it's a matter of preference. In the future, I'd wager it'll be HDMI and whatever format eventually replaces it.

Default I have the DVI box

I have the DVI cable box and connected it to my TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. A message immediately came up on the screen, telling me I did not have the permission to access that output. All cable channels were blocked. I live in New Jersey.

If the cable companies were not monopolies and you could choose between providers, they could never get away with this. I don't know how it shakes out with satellite. But in my apt house we're not allowed to put a dish on the roof, so that's that.

Contact your cable provider and ask why the DVI port is disabled. I bet if you pester them enough they'll either get you a box that has a working DVI port or they'll send a technician to enable the port.

If they won't budge, you're just out of luck and will have to use component video cables.

I doubt the port is not active, it sounds more like a STB generated screen that is indicating there is no proper "handshake" between the STB and the TV. I also seriously doubt that any technician coming out to the house is going to be able to activate the port even if it was disabled. Techs don't have that kind of access, it's software based and the provider decides if it's active or not. In most cases FCC rulings indicate they have to offer either component/hdmi/dvi, in some cases all the above or only 1 of them. If the TV is not HDCP compliant the port shuts down as prescribed by SCTE standards to ensure copy protection.

Which one is the HDMI the STB or the TV...i.e. are you connecting HDMI out from the STB to DVI in on the TV or vice versa?

Unless your friend has a new HD Tivo, he is not going to be happy with the picture quality-- he should pop for the HD DVR with the HDMI port. Does the HD Tivo have an HDMI output. . . ?

To answer some of the questions here.

I tried again to connect via the DVI outport on the SA4200HD Cablevision cablebox to the HDMI inport on the back of my set, and this time it worked. Most likely in my excitement over getting a HD set, I had screwed something up.

I have a Sammy LN-S4696D 1080p set. For the first week or so, I watched broadcasts with components and tweaked he picture modes. I was very happy with the brilliant picture.

Over components, the contrast needed to be set to 100 and the brightness to 0 to achieve the sort of intense black and saturated color I prefer.

When I connected through the DVI to HDMI connection, the picture was just as sharp but much, much darker. Now the brightness and contrast had to be constantly tweaked. The black levels varied from show to show, and even between day and night scenes in the same program.

I decided to switch back to components, after all that. I find components more consistent. I realized the 1080p feed was overkill as TV, at its most high-def, is simply 1080i, at the moment. I saw no real difference in picture quality. If there were any, in fact, it was a slight, almost imperceptible improvement, favoring the component output over the HDMI. The exact opposite of what you would expected.

I do have my Xbox 360 and HD DVD hooked up through the VGA port on the back of the TV (the only way xbox can show 1080p content, though in VGA speak, that translates to a resolution of a resolution of 1920 x 1080.) I do see a larger difference -- though still a marginal one -- between a 1080i picture and a 1080p. Certainly nothing as dramatic as the difference between VHS and DVD.

Default Cablevision HD Connection

Hello Everyone,
I just got my new HD Box from Cablevision and my HDMI cable (Monster Cable 700HD) is connected and I can seeHD channels but none of the regular cable channels. I have a Sharp LCD.

Any Suggestions, (the cable box works fine with the wires provided by the cable company)
Thanks

Supposedly a known issue with the SA4250HD. I would just use component and wait 'til CV issues an update.
