Default newer cable boxes

i never had a cable box before i got my hdtv service installed, and will my cable company contact me when they have newer boxes or do i have to ask for them? and how does anyone know when new boxes are out?

im asking cuz my box is noisy and would like to replace it with a quieter one. it's the dvr model box even though i didn't order it (free dvr).

<edit>another reason for a newer box is for hdmi output.

If the box is noisy, you can just bring it down to the office and ask for a swap. If the next one is noisy too, you may be SOL.

As far as upgrades, I wouldn't wait by the phone for an update. It seems your best course of action will be to call the company periodically and ask if they have a newer model. To be more clear, you're probably better off calling your local office, as the phone reps generally have no idea about stock at a specific location, but may at least know if there is a newer box.

BTW - are you sure that DVR is free? I wouldn't put it past a cable company to just give you the box and start charging you for it without asking you.....

thanks for the info.

yes, the dvr is free. i called them about it the day it was installed and it isn't on my first bill including hdtv.

btw, what's "SOL"?

<edit>dvr is $10 value from my cable company (comcast) and they know i have the dvr model but is free since i never ordered it.

That's a neat trick. Wonder how long they'll give it to you free for? In that case, I wouldn't be surprised if they do call you when they have a standard HD STB available, since they're losing money and all.
