Default Problem with 5.1 sound

I am having trouble getting my Motorola hd cable box to deliver 5.1 sound through TW in Los Angeles. I know that it is not a pvr, but I don't know the exact model.

I have a sceptre 37 inch hd lcd tv. I am running the hdmi cable to the tv. The cable box seems to only have the standard red/white hookups for sound. My tv only seems to have the red and white as well.

Is there a way to hook this signal to my Klipsh 5.1 sub?

Thanks

Not all TV's in fact can decode 5.1 in Dolby Digital through HDMI. I had to run HDMI and an optical line to get it. HDMI is nice and neat and is less wires but they do not tell you about the Audio issue with it. You can do what I did or get an a new receiver that has an HDMI output on it. They are pretty new and expensive still though. To be honest I went back to component a couple weeks ago to split screen 2 NFL games at once and did not even notice the difference from the HDMI. But to each is own...

Default split screen

Is this a function of your TV? Mine has PIP but I cannot get it to split it in half.

Never heard of ANY display that deals with decoding multi-channel sound. A lot of them tout stuff than simulates it kinda, sorta.

HDMI is a "smart" interface that only sends what the next piece of equipment can handle. Connect it to equipment that can't decode DD5.1 and it only send 2 channel PCM. So, you need to look at the STB and find either an optical digital out or a RCA style connector marked for digital out. One of these 2 needs to go to your AVR.
