Hello all,
I just bought a panasonic th-50px60U and would like to upgrade my cable to HD. Currently Time Warner offers like 13 channels in HD and then a package deal for a little extra that gives me ESPN HD, etc. My question, being very new to HDTV, is...... If i purchase the lower level HDTV package without ESPN, can I just tune into reg ESPN and watch it in HD. They always advertise football and things in HD. If I have a HD reciever from the cable company will I be watching Monday night football in HD when watching regular digital ESPN or will I need to purchase the extra package that includes ESPN HD to acutually view it in HD? thanks for any help in advance |

your regular ESPN channel will not be viewed in HD. It is either being broadcast in analog format or digital depending on if your division is completed with simulcast. The only way you could watch ESPN in HD would be to get the package that offers the ESPN-HD channel as part of the package.
If your local network stations are broadcasting the games (like Monday night football) you will be able to view them in HD without purchasing additional packages. |

wait I am confused??
How come my local channels are HD and ESPN isn't. Dont I have to have CBSHD, NBC HD, ABC HD, etc to watch them in HD, or do U mean they are broadcast via airwaves in HD? And then doesnt that require an antenna? |

Also, the locals in HD will be on a different channel. For ex., I get SD CBS on channel 2, but CBS in HD comes on channel 702.
If you tune to ESPN on your regular channel it is being broadcast in SD. If you order ESPN-HD, you will receive that on a different channel completely. |

BIG caveat... a lot of "old" stuff on film is not of particularly good quality. So HD just isn't going to be anywhere close to the same as from a new 70mm print. Or from a very well preserved, well lit 35mm print from, say the 70s.
