Default Comcast Motorola 6412 Hack

I have the motorola 6412 HD/DVR box with comcast. Is there any way to hack this box? ANYTHING??? Just looking for something fun to do (send the video to a pc, increase the HD, etc). Can't seem to find anything on the net other than how to hack the remote to get a 30 second commercial skip (fun but boring little hack).

any insight is greatly appreciated.

You can already send the video to a PC using the Firewire output - nothing to "hack". Nobody's really tried seriously to increase the hard drive from what I've seen but it's not as easy as just plugging in a new drive. There's hard-coded stuff that formats the drive to a certain size so even if you got the box open and got a new drive in there it would just format it to 120GB. There are USB ports that I'm sure you've seen that are intended for an external hard drive, but those aren't active yet. The firmware would have to be updated for that to happen and I haven't seen any indication of if/when that will happen.

Yeah but that only works if you want to record something straight off of TV. I don't you can't grab video off the hard drive, which is what I want to do...

If you want to try messing with it, get a bigger hard drive, then find a hard drive ghosting program and ghost the contents of the original drive to the new drive, maybe that would load everything necessary for the DVR to use it.

The firewire output is on the cable box, so you can record anything coming out of the cable box, not just live TV (provided the copy protection flag on the channel is turned off), which includes programs stored on the hard drive. You can't "copy" the files from the hard drive directly like it's a network drive, which I guess is what you're asking for, but you can do a real-time recording.

Also, a correction to my first post - the box has SATA ports which are for an external hard drive. It alse has USB ports but those are for something else

Default Ethernet Port

Is there any way to activate the ethernet port, or does it work on a fixed IP? Is there any way to figure this out? My router isn't assigning it an IP with DHCP, so it's like it's not there, unless it has a pre-assigned IP, in that case my router wouldn't show me it's IP in the DHCP listing. I thought if I could connect to that port, there could be all kinds of possibilities to hack this box.

You also have to find an open server on the box, it doesn't activate. It's set to a 169.254, as far as I can tell.
