ok,i understand that you can get the HD channels without the box.(i mean be able to watch them)but i do not believe they are being displayed in true hd.if you look at both you will see what i mean.the difference is very noticable.i am not tring to start anything and am not tring to be rude.i just know what the cable people told me and more so what i see when i look at both.

I don't know what type of display you have, but a tv with a built-in tuner, like mine, can receive HD over the air, (meaning with an antenna), and through just a regular coax cable. It is true HD, the only thing the box provides you in terms of HD is the encrypted channels such as all premiums, and TNT, ESPN, INHD1&2, and Discovery, at least in my area.

yea same here,I think you have to have digital service to have any chance at getting the HD's without the STB.Here in philly on comcast, they dont even offer non-digital service anymore. They offer a basic digital that actually comes with this really cool looking box.Its about 5inches by 6 inches but has not front led display or nothing but again its only for basic digital,no HD or DVR.And no I'm pretty sure you will have to tune in to the HD version of the channel, here our Fox is channel 2 but the HD fox is like 233 or something like that. When I plugged directly into my tv,the set does its own channel scan and assigns channels in some sorta way that I'm not familiar with, but syill in that case I still would find the normal Fox channel and the HD Fox channel as seperates.our comcast charges for the HD-DVR box but doesnt add a seperate cost for the HD channels themselves. It used to be that you got all the HD premium channels(ShoHD,HBOHD,CinHD and StarzHD)without actually having to subscribe to the premium package like HBO or Starz itself.About a year ago they all went blank and now you have to have Starz to get StarzHD and so on,hence me having all the premium channels mainly so that I can have them additional HD channels as well as having them channels available in the On-Demand.None of the On-Demand premiums have HD programming though, which I dont understand, but you can rent select new releases in HD,but very select.

The FCC prohibits the CC from blocking or molesting the HD signals that are “free” (received over air) in anyway. If your CC offers these local HD channels, then you get them with the basic pkg. you just need an HD tuner

This is not quite correct.

The CableCard and cable box merely decrypt scrambled channels. Any HD channels that are NOT encrypted will be viewable in 'real' HD without card or box. |

If your set has a QAM tuner, and you have DIGITAL cable service-- you can tune in ALL the "in the clear" HD channel without any additional cost. In the clear HD channels include ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and local PBS type cannels-- NO HBO, ESPN, or etc.-- You will get via cable the same channels you would get OTA. You MUST have a QAM tuner-- not just the digital tuner.

You guys are lucky.TWC that serves the Dayton,OH market is shady.I tried that with my dad since he has cable and his HD Toshiba couldn't pick-up anything. They moved the locals from 2.1,7.1,16.2,16.3,16.4,16.5,16.6,22.1,26.1,45.1 and 45.2 up to the 700 to 800 range. His tv picked up nada, zilch, zippo.TWC don't have a enough subsribers to complain about this rip job.I wanted my dad to see how impressive hd is and can't he refuses to pay for anything extra.
