Default HDMI Problems?PLEASE HELP!

Last week hooked up the new HDMI comcast box with no problems but after 2 days the DVR stopped working..swapped boxes this morning now when I hook the new box up,after the signal was sent the picture was there no problems..go into the user settings to change aspect ratio-override etc. and the screen went away.Exited from screen and went back to cable, screen was fine for a second but then goes black...sound is still there just no picture.unplugged box and tried again and this time I got screen over the actual cable picture that says something to the nature of "the HD copyright protection has been comprimised, please use ypbpr(component) to connect cable box"When I called comcast, the guy,who actually knew more than the average service tech, told me he has never heard of this and assumes the box has a bad HDMI port.WTF?this is 2 boxes in a week with 2 different problems. Any ideas?

Well, the first question is: Does your tv support HDCP for copy protection? If not, that is why you will get that message and a black screen. If it does then make sure you turn your tv on first and then the STB. That way the tv is on and able to respond to the STB when it asks for verification.

The next thing, if that does not work, is to see if there is a known problem with your tv. There have been problems with some Sony sets and HDMI.

I have Comcast , a Sammy, and a Moto 3412 , if Im hooked up via HDMI and with the box off and go into set up menu on the box, I usually get the copy protection message as well.

The general way around it is to view the set up menu via component , or even on the box display itself.

Try this , with the TV off , just hit menu on you box , verify at least that its 16 by 9 , 1080I.

Turn off the box. Turn on the TV , switch to another input on the TV , switch back to the HDMI input {remember you still have the box in the off position} you should see on the box in the display DU1

Thats the TV and box talking to each other that you are HDCP compliant.

Wait 2 seconds, turn on you Cable box and you should be good to go..

Holy crap!I'm at work right now so I wont be able to try this until tonight, but damn it sounds like a little bit of a project to use the hdmi....this tv is my dad,who is 50 and not prone to adapting,so will he have to do this everytime he turns the tv on?hopefully though this works because its making me insane.I thought, how hard could it be to hook up the set with an HDMI?When it didnt work I was ready for the asylum....its ONE damn cable...what have I done wrong?Well thanks for the help and hopefully this works and my problems are solved........for now

By the way,its a 57" Toshiba..not sure of exact model but its rear projection...definetly not a DLP though

No your dad should not have to do this everytime, but yes hitting the setup menu through HDMI can cause this , and once its working , if he stays out of the setup menu and generally turns on the TV first, then the cable box, he should not have a problem.

That being said , since its your dad, and he wants to watch TV w/o any craziness , I would suggest going with component cables , Their is no copy protection , and even though I notice a slight {very}improvement in my display , Component will deliver full resolution and not cause any hassles.

yea I suggested the same but even reluctant to change, he's even more so determined to squeeze every cents worth ouuta his tv.He feels that if he has HDMI,he wants to use it,just that he lives in some surreal world that even the latest technology should bug free...lol.Well he should home about 10 pm EST so i will walk him thru your advice over the phone and hopefully all goes smooth....Thank you for the info and if it does work I assure you he will not be shown how to get into the user settings

First of all... your HDMI cable will need to be HDCP compliant. If it is, then most like using HDMI with a DVR will not work... due to the HDCP copyright protection feature built-in to most HDMI devices. You will need to hook your box up with DVI or Componant cables for it to work porperly.

The people at Comcast told me to never turn my box off, leave it on all the time. That's what I do, and havent had a problem since.

Apparently comcast's motorola dvr box does not support DVI yet. That is what the code stands for. It can only disply dui or du1 on it's box. It stands for DVI. It means the dvr and tv cannot communicate. Eventually the DVR will freeze and the only way to reset it is to unplug it for 1 minute and plug it back in. The solution is easy, don't use an HDMI or DVI cable. I used one of the component cables (the ones with five wires, three for video, two for audio) and the dvr started working again. Make sure you actually unplug the DVI/HDMI cable from the box and tv.

Good luck!

I would really suggest using component as I don't believe that projection TV to be HDCP compliant. It will save you (and your Dad) many hours of troubleshooting and frustration.
