I know it's possible to record the material on a VCR, but I noticed right next to the audio/video RCA outs on the front of the box there is a USB port. So, assuming you had a computer with a big hard drive, could you use the USB output to download true HD recordings from the DVR?

No, not with USB. If activated, possibly with a firewire connection.

The USB ports aren't activated. By law the firewire ports should be activated, so that would be your way of doing it. But if the channels are encrypted then you won't be able to. There's a big thread at AVS Forum on how to do this: http://www./avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695
