What is HD?

I have a tv that needs the hd tuner to get hd programming. I got the motorola dvr from Comcast...does this also work as an hd tuner? I mean, can I plug in an antenna to the box and receive local channels in hi def?
It's bothering me, because although I get a great picture and hi-def channels, I've no way of really knowing if it's a true hi-def picture. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. |

I have the Motorla DVR/HD Capable Digital box from Comcast too. As far as I know, yes it will get HD Channels for you, but your need a HDTV to receive them with true HD video/audio. My old Comcast black digital box gave me a blank screen on all HD Channels with just audio, but this box gives me something different. When I first got the DVR box the Comcast installer hooked it up to my 27' tv, and said I would be able to view/hear the HD Channels, but the picture would not fit my screen. We went to the HD channels and they appeared like a picture in a frame that was matted. The picture also seemed a little wavy. Then after a few days, I switched the box to my 32' tv, and all of the HD channels except Comcast Sportsnet fit that screen perfect. I am pretty sure these are not true HD channel outputs, but are digital outputs, as they are a sharp/clear picture compared to the SD channel pictures of the same channel which sometimes have a little grain on them. I now watch and record off the HD (ABC/NBC/CBS/WB/FOX/ESPN) channels for that reason. I am not sure if I changed a setting from 480 to 480i when I switched the box from the 27' to the 32' to get the better picture on the HD channels or it just had to do with the screen size. If I am going to continue to get these HD channels to fit my 32' tv like this, I might wait out the price of a 34' HDTV set until it falls below $1000. I don't know if this info helps you out or not, and maybe someone who knows more than me can explain our situations to us. Thanks.
