What is HD?

All,
I am new to HDTV. We live outside Detroit, MI (50 miles) and have just purchased a new Sony HDTV. We assumed we could get local HDreception by getting hooked up with Charter Cable (our provider). Where we bought the TV others with Charter Cable told us they got local programs on HD but I did not find their exact addresses. However, now we find that where we live we cannot get HDTV on local stations. This means we only get about 3-4 HDTV stations including HBO that Charter specifically provides. As I see it our options are these: 1) Wait until HDTV by Charter comes of age 2) Purchase an antenna (any idea how much this costs?) 3) Get a satelite dish for reception. Although Charter clearly stated in their pamphlet that reception of local station varies by area, should I feel hoodwinked because they did not tell me about the lack of reception of local stations when they hooked up the TV with their HDTV system? In my opinion, they had to know the areas of local station reception. Curious. If this is a redundant theme please let me know and I will look up where this has been previously addressed. TIA, B |

I live in west branch,180 miles north of detroit, and had nbc to start. they just added abc the week before and cbs is suppose to be on too,but havent got it yet.The only 1 i know is screwed is fox which is owned by sinclair, which is asking astronomical fees i guess. hols on and you should have the locals a lot quicker than sat.,if they ever do.
