Unhappy 1080i tv showing in 480i

I'm new at this, but here's my problem. I just bought a Sharp Aquos LC-40D68UT hdtv (1080i). I have Cox Cable and have an hd cable box (Motorola DCX3200). I hooked everything up with an HDMI connection and the HD channels are coming through clear at 1080i, but the other channels are fuzzy and it displays that they are coming through at 480i. Also, the Guide and the Information bars on the bottom of ALL channels are fuzzy! (this includes the hd channels). It's so bizarre. Any help out there?

What resolution do you have the box set to? I would set that to 1080i. Bottom line is, SD channels are broadcast in 480i.. That is SD. They will look "fuzzy" and not nearly as good as your HD channels. Just a fact of SD life. Especially if they are stretched from 4:3. Not sure what the deal is with your guide though. That should not be.

The Tv shows the resolution of the incoming signals, and SD channels are only in 480i so that's what you are seeing. And the guide and info bars are probably in SD resolution also. The TV upconverts everything to 1080p for display but it can't magically create resolution when it does not exist in the incoming signal.

Thanks for the replies, I'm not sure how to set the box to 1080i, how do I do that? Also, the strange thing is, we have another hdtv in the house (1080i)with same hd cable box and don't have the same problem with the fuzziness on the non-hd channels and the guide, info bar, etc. ??

Not sure as it depends on the STB. Some you can change the output by going into the video settings menu and change it to 480p,720p orn1080i/p. And on some you need to use the "format" or some other funtction key. I would check the manual. But you should not experience the "fuzzy" guide/banner screens. May be a connection issue or bad STB. Can you post a pic of the guide? You may want to give your provider a call.

Default This will solve Comcast HD 1080i TV 480i problem

Home audio & video: HDMI looks worse than Component on Comcast HD Box. Help!

HD settings?

Make sure your box is set up for 1080I, to do this turn the box off then hit the menu button on the remote. It will bring you to the user settings screen. The HDMI/YPBPR output should say 1080I, also make sure your 4:3 override is set to 480p. If your using your hdmi output then go to the additional HDMI settings. (make sure the color space is set to YCC 4:4:4.) I hope that helps. The bar along the bottom shouldn't be blurry. If it is that usually has to do with the response rate of the TV. Another thing to check is make sure your tv is not in stretch mode that will distort your picture. Your not going to notice much difference between HDMI and component on the cable box.

Result: Awesome Picture
Comcast HD Cable Box CDX3400
LG Plasma TV 50" 50PJ350
HDMI - HDMI
