Question HD over coaxial?

First time poster, long time viewer.

I just bought my first HDTV (huzzah!), its an LG 42" flat panel that I picked up this weekend at BestBuy. (Liked it better than the Bravia in the same size - I still think Sony does better at the larger sizes based on what I saw).

Anyway, all I have for my cable subscription is the basic digital cable from Time Warner; channels 1-25 (cbs, nbc, fox, abc, usa, tnt).

Can I get the local stations in HD over my coaxial? My cable goes from the wall jack directly to the TV. If not, how can I get those local channels in HD if I don't have a box? Is there a cable or another device?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum

I don't have Time Warner Cable so it's best to contact them directly.

Do you have a roof antenna? If so, you can connect via coaxil cable and receive your local HD channels free of charge.

If it is digital cable you can. But only 1 way to find out. Since your TV does have a QAM tuner, just connect the cable directly to your TV and do a scan for analog and digital channels for cable and see what you get. If you can't, you will need to call TW about HD service or connect an antenna up to it and do the same scan (this time of OTA instead of cable).

Scan the cable with your TV. If you have a QAM tuner, and the channels are being sent over the cable, you should be able to get locals in HD.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I'll try them out and let you know. Guess I should research TWC first, lolz.

I've got a ton of questions about setting up the entire house with HDTV's and extenders, etc., but those can wait.

So yes, I guess I didn't do a full scan as I'm now picking up the HD signals from the local stations, including some in between. I also notice that some programs come in at 16:9|1080i, but it appears in a 4:3 format, yet the TV is set for 16:9. Then, when it goes to commercial it goes back to the 16:9.

I'm really quite a n00b at most of this. I know enough to be dangerous, but I can also get lost in a paper bag. I'm thirsty for knowledge!

I wanted a very low priced package from Time Warner that only included a "just above basic cable and internet service". The gal on the phone suggested a package called 'very navidad', (I hope I spelled it right).
The price in my area(socal)was $49.99+6.50 for a HD box. With that I get channels 2-98, a bunch of repeats of the same previous channels in the 100 and above and all but three HD channels.
Plus internet service...for $57.00. I think that's pretty good.
P.S. A couple of CSR didn't even recommend this package but I found one that was actually willing to assist me with my cheap scape ways.
P.S.S. The package includes 20+ Spanish stations(it's actually a Spanish language package)

"Mas Canales" More spanish channels and the basic cable programing.

Basic cable only. You should get the digital channels, if sent, in the same range of frequencies being sent. Local HD or digital channels are sent in like (local number).1, etc. You can do a channel up and go up one level, .2 etc. Make a channel listing of what you find. These channels, if sent, are normally NOT supported. Also, if at the same time do the scan, someone on the same node as you orders an on demand title, it will appear on your scan, maybe 88.13 or something. Beware, a full digital scan can take a while.
