I'm getting channels like 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3, 4, 4.1...etc. The channels I get are broadcast in SD 480, 720, 1080, etc but i can't find a tv guide for this lineup anywhere. so i'm at a loss

That's the issue with using a QAM tuner for getting in your channels. What you're seeing is the OTA channel slots used for some of your channels. With digital feeds, the actual channel slot doesn't necessarily map to the frequency used (unlike with analog).
When you're using an antenna to get stuff over the air, the mapping of the channel to the appropriate frequency is handled via metadata in the feed itself. So a channel, on say, frequency 57, may map to channel 2.1 on your dial. This is known as PSIP mapping data. When it comes to cable channels carried 'in the clear' (aka unencrypted) the mapping is provided by your cable provider. So CBS in your market will be mapped to channel 2.1 by your cable company, to match what the OTA number is. So what you're seeing is the channel number for your local station, being mapped by your cable company. When it comes to national cable channels, that's where things get screwy. Cable companies don't map those in the metadata for users hooking in with a QAM tuner. The mapping is done by your cable box. So, ESPN, e.g., may end up on channel 70, but the frequency it's on may be something totally different (129.2, e.g.). So, with your locals, chances are the mapping is done for you (2.1 is the OTA channel slot for CBS in NY, and will also be for the clear QAM channel slot on your cable system. With national channels, since no such mapping is provided in the QAM feed, you'll need to scan and find those channels. Cable companies don't advertize what these channel frequencies are - and they change them frequently, requiring you to rescan. Why don't they provide them? Simple - they want you to get one of their cable boxes. For you local channels (e.g. 2.1) you can just look to your local OTA channel listings. For the nationals, well those are up to you to find and track... or you can lease a box from your cable company. |
