Default buying movies; Blu-Ray or regular dvd

I am looking at buying a couple of expensive movies that are offered in Blu-Ray and standard DVD formats. How long do you think standard DVD players will be around? Should I buy the Blu-Ray versions just for longevity of hardware?

If you have a Blu-Ray player and want to take advantage of the Hi-Def visuals as a result, then go for the Blu version. If Hi-Def isn't an issue, then DVD will suit you just fine.

Either way, even if they stop making DVD players, the Blu-Ray players will continue to play all your DVDs.

Default Blu-Ray

If you have a Blu-Ray player, why would you even consider buying a standard def DVD ??? It makes no sense. Blu-Ray offers superior picture, superior sound....what's to decide ???

I Still buy certain DVDs (soem dramas and comedies), even if there IS a BD version. I disagree that, in a lot of video, the difference is great enough between the 2 to warrant the cost.

That's just how I roll

I don't buy a lot of dramas and comedies compared to action and sci-fi, but I definitely see your point for this.

If you're a real film buff, there's always the matter of availability. There are tons of movies that aren't on Blu-Ray yet... and may never be if streaming/downloads end up killing discs. For many titles, the DVD format may represent the last chance for a consumer to physically own the film, ever.

Well one reason would be cost another would be increased def, however some movies like "stargate" dont benefit from being bluray at all the transfer was poor. But overall if you see a movie like "kingdom of heaven" in DVD then Bluray you will make the jump its a great transfer and you get more movie. Forget the extras they will continue to be crappy and not worth the hype.

Last chance? I donno about that. We are cows and follow what the hollywood bulls want us to do. Remember VHS? then came DVD now bluray next will be 3D or something like it. Its just another way for Hollywood to sell us the same old movies in better format increasing their bottom line. I say MOO!

Yeah neither do I who wants to see a comedy in Bluray well I would if it cost the same as DVD otherwise forget it. Although I dont buy anything the day its released because I know in two to three months it will be half price or lower. Those who dont care can buy it the day its released not me. I use Redbox free movie rentals to see the movies I didnt get from the internet (the day it was released in the theaters).

if you want to get more excitement when watching movies with special effect, just go on blue ray.
If you watching some dramas or comedies, just buy DVD

I totally agree... MOO! But what do you think the Hollywood Bulls want to sell us? A hard copy of a movie which they need to spend money manufacturing, or a downloadable file which costs them nothing in overhead?

Right now files are relatively cheap (except for iTunes) because while the general public may be willing to spend $10-$50 on a physical hard-copy, they still view a purchasable download as somehow less than a real product.

But I can guarantee you as downloadable rentals become more popular, and take a larger bite out of the brick-and-mortar rental market, we will see more folks opting just to buy a file of their favorite movie rather than a disc... particularly with the advent of media players with "libraries", which will impart a more tangible feel to the purchased downloads.

As downloads become the norm and discs begin to fade away, the prices for downloads will shoot up to fill the gap left by their physical counterparts... so the Bulls will still make their $20 on new releases- the only difference will be they'll get to pocket more of it due to the even slimmer overhead.

Downloads to own will not make it for a long time. Most people want a physical copy of their movie that they can do anything with. Now the rental market will probably shift to majority downloads within the next 5-10 years.

Things I take into consideration:

Before I buy a movie I view the Blu Ray review section of the forum to see if there is a truly a difference between Blu and Standard. With some of the older movies, it's not worth the few extra dollars.

I have kids and although many of the Pixar/Dreamworks movies are phenomenal I have to take into consideration where they will be played. I have a DVD player in my car and also 2 standard DVD's on different floors of the house so I generally succumb to buying standard as it needs to be played in different areas.

If it's available on Blu-ray, i buy (or rent) the Blu-ray. I simply wait, until the Blu-ray movie is available for the price of an average DVD and buy it at that point.
