Yes, DtHD was added by firmware update a number of months after introduction. It is a clone of the early Pioneer player and it doesn't play CD's is the report I have read. I have never put a CD in the player to check, but I accept that is correct.

I didn't think CD support was included until the S300 was released.

i owned BDP-S300 from SONY, it was extremely slow to start up (which i don't mind) but it was even slower loading disney and fox latest BDs, and sometimes after loading for 3-4 minutes it locks up. it was a disaster, one day it locked on me for good and SONY replaced it with S350 (after complaining so much from me) i sold my BDP-S350 and got myself Pioneer BDP-51FD and i am so happy with this player (it is profile 1.1) for my movie watching it is best it upconverts regular DVD best and BD performance is fantastic also, it is slow as compared to Sony S350 but i could wait a few seconds to enjoy best PQ for next hour or two. Most of the new BD players are still slow as compared to DVD player and have frequent problems with different BD, none of the BD players are perfect at this point all of them ave some glitches. What bugs consumers is they were told BD is better than DVD and when they encounter these problems they get upset (it is upsetting when you bring this new box home and all family members are around and your BD player won't play).
BD players are not better as compared to DVD infancy years (DVD were much more stable).

It is just a marketing strategy to make profits, the basic players have very slim margins and the excellent PS3 is sold at a loss. I have no problem with Sony offering an ES player trying to capitalize on the high end brand name and tiny market that might pay for the product, it is a business after all.

Chris
Makes sense; I have heard that the ES models have been simply not worth the price tag, but wanted to make sure that's what you meant by "a joke."

At any rate, especially after the latest review of the new ES model in Home Theater, this deck is definitely off my consider list.

Another instance of what I meant by Sony's unbelievably slow initial wave of first generation decks; as I said, I can remember watching a demo at a Frys and it took the machine like 20 minutes to read the Fantastic 4 disc...it was absolutely ridiculous.

But what of Sony now...can any of their models outside of the ES deck be recommended in the same breath as the new Panasonics?

What really bothered me about this company was the fact that they were a major mover and shaker behind the whole BD format launch, and their hardware hasn't been really well-received; constant updates to make the players work right...slow loading times...slow menu response...mediocre reception for playback quality by professional reviewers and consumers...you would think they'd be making the BEST players, hands down.

Here's an update. The replacement Frost/Nixon disc arrived from Netflix and behaved exactly like the first one. I returned it. I guess I didn't really want to see it that badly after all. I found a firmware update with a higher number than the one I installed last week. Two different Sony sites have two different "latest" firmware updates. Will that fix it? I don't know. I know the Blu-Ray people would do well to settle on a format and make it standard rather than making it a moving target. Frankly, the hassle isn't worth it to me. I cancelled the Blu-Ray part of my Netflix subscription and I'll put the Sony player on Ebay next weekend. I guess that's what you get when you have a product designed and implemented by a committee.

No. That is what you get when the studios are more concerned about piracy than making their PAYING customers happy.
