I have just noticed that when playing a BD on a ps3 the sound is much louder and even the bass is deeper than stand alones. Does anyone but me feel this way and what player are you comparing it to?

I don't find any difference between the PS3 decoding compared to the Sony BDP-S550 decoding and outputting PCM over HDMI to a Yamaha RX-V663. I also don't find any difference between the PS3 decoding and standalone players bitstreaming the advanced audio codecs to the RX-V663. I don't believe there is an audible difference between a properly working PS3 and properly working standalone players.

I don't notice any difference. I have a PS3 and BD35, both connected to my Denon 4806 via HDMI, both are outputting audio via PCM (the Denon does not decode HD audio).

I just love the simplicity of the BD35 as it integrates into my system easier.

just do me a favor whenever you have time use the same movie and just check the SAL and the PS3 at the same volume and tell me if they are the same loudness because I feel there is a noticable difference with the ps3 and everything it is hands down louder than other electronics at the same volume.

I cannot remember hearing any difference back in December when i quickly checked out the BD35 where i have the PS3, but just remember louder is not necessarily better. To accurately/fairly compare you must compare both at the same volume levels.

good point.
this loudness thing always comes in to play when talking about dtsma vs dd true hd.many think dts is louder so its better then dd truehd, and thats so wrong.in true tests done back in the dvd days.
it was proven theres no difference between the two.
tests today on hd audio codes results are the same.
i'm sure dts doesn't mind the debate.i like both dts and dd,but if i was blindfolded i coundn't tell if i was hearing dts or dd.
if you think one is better then the other then the hype works, each company has done there job ..well! i know off subject.

Just a thought: When decoding to PCM (which i guess you must be doing, since the PS3 doesn't bitstream), you can directly adjust the volume level the PS3 is outputting. Maybe that setting it turned way up on your system.

I would have though there were quite a few variables that could be taken into account here. I would imagine it all depends on the settings and speaker systems involved.

And by the way the ps3 is louder than everything and yes I have the volume at +2 on it's system menu, which I feel should be on every electronic there is no distortion in sound when put to this so it's definately not a negative...

It does bitstream Standard audio through HDMI, but it CANNOT bistream the HD audio via HDMI. You MUST have the PS23 decode it via HDMi to actually hear the HD audio formats.

true. the PS3 and the HDMI 1.3 spec were both finalised in 2006. i suspect 1.3 wasn't ready in time when the game console went into production.
