They updated the delivery schedule and it is due to arrive tomorrow, 5-15-09. I only work half days on Fridays, so it will work out perfectly
Isn't it funny how we tech-geeks get excited about a new toy?

Yeah. I am trying to recondition myself to NOT buy new toys as I do not need anything right now though.

![]() The good thing, for me, is that I can deduct/depriciate this player as part of the business... at least that is what my CPA told me.. now if I can do the same for my HT room and equipment..

By the way, the SD up-conversion is simply great in the Oppo tradition! On a couple of decent SD transfers, original Spiderman and The Fifth Element, as well my copy the series 'The Company'...I would give it the edge over the Panasonic. Again, you would have to have them side by side, but there is a difference IMO!

I know "need" is not the best word choice, but I am trying to look more from a need perspective now. My next likely purchase will be a plasma to replace the 47" LCD in my bedroom so I have the better blacks where the lights are almost always off.

"Can you give some kind of % SD PQ improvement that the Oppo had over your BD55?"
Differences in overall detail were observed, as well as color saturation. Not great differences. Might well meet your 5% criteria, or a perfect score vs. 95%. Consider, each time I went from the Panasonic to the Oppo because the Oppo loads so much faster, the time between observations would be shorter. Results were consistent for the 3 disks I tried. The constant being the same 1080p display, of course. On the The Company disk, differences were the least, but then while nicely composed, colors are quite muted on this transfer which I think are more a result of production values than anything technical. I could see no difference if both players are 'forced' set to 1080p or set to Auto. In a nutshell, small differences but ones I found repeatable.

Thanks for this added info Daleb!
Maybe when my son leaves for college in the fall, I will think about the Oppo to replace it in the main HT room if he takes the PS3 with him.

So, is there any "concrete concensus" in which we can specify whether a new Panasonic or possibly the Oppo would be better in DVD upscaling? This is an important buying factor for me, so I would be interested in knowing if these two mid-priced competitors are close in the upconversion performance, or if the Oppo comes out a bit ahead...
Further, are there any other brands in this price category I should be considering for solid DVD upconversion? Isn't there a Samsung model that carries the Realta chip, or am I mistaken? In the past, I never would have considered a Samsung product based on their reliability reports, but I would consider a player in that sub-$1000 range if one of theirs carried the Realta or Reon chip for upconversion... |
